Do the Canadians calculate their unemployment rate the way we do? If so, they’re still in trouble.
Similar methodology- the labour force consists of everybody who is either working or actively seeking work, and active job-seekers are counted as unemployed. One reason that the rate hasn’t gone down much is that a lot of people who had given up last year are now looking for work again.
BTW this last recession is the first time in my lifetime (perhaps the first time in the history of this country) where our unemployment rate was lower than that in the USA.
