Rear Adm. Nora Tyson will become the first woman to take command of a carrier strike group in a ceremony Thursday aboard the carrier George H.W. Bush at Norfolk Naval Station.
Tyson will assume command of Carrier Strike Group 2 from Capt. Jeffrey Hesterman, the acting commander.

She was fast-tracked because she is a woman and this is a politically correct assignment for a job for which she is unqualified.
WTF? Oh, it’s the Navy. Nevermind.
Who’s he?
.
How sweet
In Sept and Oct, all the nice freepers will be back.
But I know what you’re saying.
She took more time than normal to get her wings, her only command was for a training unit, which is basically a paper pusher job, and she spent most of the rest of her time as an “executive assistant”. She was nothing more than a secretary; including being an “executive assistant” for the CNO, which is a political appointment.
If you want it put in context, this would be like Harriet Miers being nominated and confonfirmed as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, except that Meirs was more qualified to be a justice than this woman to this command.
Thanks for the perspective. Now lets watch and see how she performs.
“This thread makes me sad to think of the direction where FR is heading.”

Does ‘FR’ stand for ‘Feminist Republic?’

” Now lets watch and see how she performs.”

The “Late Great USA?”

That group will get attacked. Then we'll see how the combat experience relieving Hurricane Katrina , assistant operations officer on the training carrier and Navigator of a carrier come in to play.
Then of course as officer in charge at Naval Air Maintenance Training Depot 1079 and as a political-military planner in the Asia-Pacific Division of the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate, she knows how to fill out forms and prioritize political assignments.
Finally as executive assistant(secretary) for the assistant ( That's an ASSISTANT TO AN ASSISTANT) to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of StafF AND most recently, as executive assistant for the Chief of Naval Operations.... OH MY. I want her in charge of a military operation. My son is going to be the first in 3 generations to pass on the Marines. I wouldn't want him to go to prison for being a warrior or made to stand by and stab your brother in the back for political brown nosing points. Nothing good will come of it. Go to college, study chinese (mandarin) and business.
I'm waiting for the political officers to be assigned to forward units like the old Russian P.O. in the second world war and cold war.
I pray for all my classmates/brothers in the field and all the sons and daughters serving during these dangerous times.
They are truly in harm's way.
Well, I’ve read all the comments so far.
She might be all right, but I kind of doubt it. Impossible to tell, however, without talking to people who have worked with her.
I just can’t put down the suspicion that this is more politically correct affirmative action nonsense.
Ok, you’re the expert . . . how does a man get the job?
Positional authority...but COMMAND of a Strike Group? That requires more than position.
That's a gas!
No. Lot’s of knee-jerk reactions on this thread, though. Maybe the “R” stands for reactionary, as the libs I dealt with for all so many years in Ann Arbor claimed.
they never look like Laurie Dhue. :(
You don't know what you're talking about.
CO of VQ4 and CO of USS Bataan are both billets for Captain and both highly respected commands.
However, seems to me she could use some Air Strike experience on her resume for this particular assignment. She's not just CO of the ship, but of the STRIKE GROUP. That typically requires some combat experience...shooting and breaking things first hand.
Furthermore, most officers groomed for flags have done "shore cruises" at a number of staff assignments.
Finally, the military does not exactly include hot vs. ugly in its decision tree regarding promotion to flag rank. Rarely is the military service exactly good for one's looks.
I respectfully suggest that the more shallow in our ranks learn some critical thinking. Jesus, people. Grow up already.
Definately a FINO. Sorry if I can’t quite picture her in the Bull Halsey mold.
This country’s military is going to get annihilated in the next war against a real opponent.
She hasn’t even been an XO of a major ship.
If she hadn’t been the secretary for the CNO, she would have never gotten this position. A freaking executive assistant gets assigned to this command and you think she is qualified.
What do you think this is doing to the morale of likely hundreds of officers more qualified than this woman?
