Finally, the military does not exactly include hot vs. ugly in its decision tree regarding promotion to flag rank.

But political correctness is a HUGE factor, and don't even try to argue that it isn't.

I read the entire bio, and I still believe she isn't even close to being one of the more qualified officers for this command.

Yes it is a big deal.

Particularly that she got a ship command at all because she did not initially graduate from Annapolis, but Vanderbilt. So getting a command like this is a big deal!

"She hasn’t even been an XO of a major ship."

Read the biography. She was CO of the USS Bataan...over 40,000 tons, an air wing, a Marine Battalion Landing Team, SEALS and multiple assorted minor commands.

She was also CO of VQ4...part of the Strategic Nuclear Deterrent. A CO of such a command must be willing and able to place the order to kill 100 million people...knowing what that order says in advance.

"This thread makes me sad to think of the direction where FR is heading. "

One of a very few reasonable posts on this thread. Considering the number of the less than sensible posts here, it looks as if many posters have already arrived there.

Small world...I completely missed the story when it occurred, but Ms Graf was an underclass in my company at USNA...Have not had any contact with her since so I cant say anything about her character one way or the other...

Ok, you’re the expert . . . how does a man get the job?

Tyson will lead a complement of ships and aircraft that includes the cruisers Philippine Sea, Gettysburg, Monterey, and Vella Gulf; the destroyers Bainbridge, James E. Williams, Mahan, Nitze, Mitscher, and Truxtun ; the frigates Carr and Hawes; and Carrier Air Wing 8. ( I quote the article)

Now she's going to be "the man" for Carrier Group 2 in the Pacific.

Compare her qualifications to this.

graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy and was designated a naval aviator in March 1980.
-deployed from both coasts in six fleet tours, flying the A-7E Corsair II and FA-18 Hornet in over 100 combat and contingency missions off the coasts of Lebanon and Libya, and over the Balkans and Iraq.
-scoring the first Navy MiG kill of operation Desert Storm prior to dropping his bombs on an airfield in western Iraq on January 17, 1991, and leading the opening "Shock and Awe" strike of operation Iraqi Freedom on March 21, 2003.
- service as commander, Carrier Strike Group 10
-commander of Carrier Air Wing 2 aboard USS Constellation (CV-64)
-commodore of the Strike Fighter Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet in Lemoore, Calif.; service as the first commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 122 (the Navy's first FA-18E/F Super Hornet squadron) and commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 81.
-logged over 4,800 flight hours and 1,347 arrested landings on 15 different aircraft carriers. Military awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with Gold star, Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat 'V,' and Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. He has completed executive education programs at the Naval War College, National Defense University, Army War College, Harvard University, and UNC Chapel Hill.

Now I know this GUY isn't an English major, didn't assist in Katrina operations but Rear Adm. Mark I Fox has a pretty solid resume... doncha think? Now stack that up against that genderless freak that is going to be in CHARGE of an air group and numerous craft in the hottest place in the ocean... right by Korea-and/or the mid-East if her command is "chopped".

or how about this resume?

-vice commander, Naval Mine and ASW Command, with operational commander duties in 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleets.
-commanded Destroyer Squadron 15, from 2005–2007, forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan.
-The squadron developed new tactics, techniques and procedures for anti-submarine warfare and maritime ballistic missile defense while exercising extensively with navies throughout the 7th Fleet area.
-From 2001-2003 he commanded USS Roosevelt (DDG 80).
-1997-1998 Girrier commanded USS Guardian (MCM 5)– a forward deployed Avenger-class mine countermeasure ship operating from Sasebo, Japan in support of 7th Fleet operations.
-served as an instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, R. I. In Washington,

Notice any difference in the types of background to the "first female" Strike Force Commander? Like command of a vessel group or something besides being the assistant to the assistant CNO. This is Rear Adm Girrier's resume and he's CO of Strike Force 11.

Or this newly assigned guy..

- the 52nd president of the U.S. Naval War College on Nov. 6, 2008.
-served as commander, Carrier Strike Group 7 (Ronald Reagan Strike Group), returning from deployment in October 2008.
-officer of USS Valley Forge (CG 50) during Operation Desert Storm.
-commanding officer, USS Callaghan (DDG 994

That was Strike Group 7's CO's resume Rear Adm. Wisecup.

I'm not an expert at anything except marksmanship in the past but I know that I'd want someone with a little more meat on their resume than a vagina, funky haircut and political connections.

Of course that's just me, and I'm no longer at the very bottom of the chain of command. Your mileage may differ and past performance is no indication of future results. /sarc

She would not be making any decison like that. Might carry out a small part of such an order, but that is about it.

She might be a nice person, but she simply does not have the career path of someone who should be given this command. This reeks of political correctness and to deny it is extremely naive.

How would you rate Eisenhower’s pre-war worthiness for command?

Eisenhower, and other top commanders of WW II were stuck in their lower ranks due to the system at the time when there wasn’t an up or out system. He and others were well known in the War Department and tagged for command and rapid advancement in the event of war.

I’m simply arguing that, this woman’s physical attractiveness is not a requisite for the job, nor is the failure of other women at posts unrelated. That’s it.

I'll say it again in case you didn't hear me the first time. You don't know what you are talking about.

Before Strike Group 7, this guy had a lesser resume.

Both lesser commands than VQ4 (TACAMO) and USS BATAAN (LHD 5).

Do some research.

OK. I guess a communication command with Lockheed EC-130 and E-6's is the same as combat missions and carrier landings..... and relief effort for Katrina are enough and support missions in the Gulf X2 is just like commanding Carrier Strike Force 7 after commanding a Ticonderoga Class missile cruiser after commanding a guided missle destroyer. You know, right.?.. get a little boat, then a bigger boat, then a BIG boat with planes on it that you've flown.

She's gonna do just fine.

Heck even a dumb old ground pounder knows that the Navy never makes a mistake of promoting women into dangerous situations before they're ready.

It's not like she's in charge of the lives of several thousand men, the safety of our fleet in the Pacific and Mideast, or assuming operational command in an area that is a flash point. Heck the North Koreans aren't a naval threat and the Chinese would never think of actually using the sea to attack Taiwan.... they'd just walk over there, right? It's just the ocean.... bunch of water. I just hope she figures out a way for the Navy to "go green" with fuel, diversify gays and muzzies into a fellowship of command, and let our brothers and sisters around the world know that if there is a disaster, the US Navy is there to deliver aid.... just like it was intended to. Her training in communication and disaster relief and operational support will help in that mission profile.

kumbaya....

I was actually referring to his lack of combat experience, which seems to be harped upon excessively here. Contrast that with other Army leaders like MacArthur and Marshall. I’m not contesting that he was recognized as an able administrator. However, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that he benefited from the patronage of George Marshall, and was thus propelled into positions of importance. Yet, we have Freepers deriding her association with the CNO and claiming that this was her sole reason for promotion.
