Almost 5 million California adults say they could use help with a mental or emotional problem, according to a survey released Wednesday by researchers at UCLA. About 1 million of them meet the criteria for "serious psychological distress."
However, only one in three people who perceive a need for mental health services or are in serious distress have seen a professional for treatment, the survey found.
The survey was conducted among more than 44,000 adults as part of the 2005 California Health Interview Survey, administered through the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. Since the survey was conducted, the recession probably has contributed to worsening mental health for even more people, said the lead author of the study, David Grant.

The great strength that people of faith are suppose to acquire is not a belief that calamity will never strike them, but that, with God and their faith they will get through it.
Of course if you are taught that the gubernut can manage society so perfectly that calamity cannot strike anyone, or that if it does there is someone else, someone in particular to blame, and someone else who can and must rescue you from the situation (which proves inaccurate for the most part), then of course, when that rescue does not come you do not have the strength to get through the calamity, and you see your dilemma as a “mental health” problem.
I have some friends, a married couple, who, though having no children, acquired a very large and expensive home, with a big mortgage, in the middle part of the housing bubble. The husband used to work in construction, and has been laid off for about three years now, leaving the wife as the sole "breadwinner" in their formerly DINK (double income no kids) family.
Home prices and sales have recovered enough in their area that they could get out from under their very big mortgage, while they still can. Instead, as Obama supporters, they are blaming Republicans for not allowing the Democrats to "add enough stimulus to the economy" - to rescue them, as the husbands "mental health" continues to deteriorate.
You have to make half a million a year just to afford an 1800 sq ft house!
If one will admit it, they are on the road to recovery. That leaves another 40% (or more...) untreated...

Really? I suggest the North Texas area and stick to the east side of the DFW metropolitan area. More conservative and the big heat island effect of the metro area weakens any storm fronts moving in from West Texas...turning them from hail and tornado producers into massive rain producers.

Well, I believe there are about 40% registered as Democrats in the state. I’d say you’ve got a pretty good chance of being right there.
I don’t mean to appear nativist, but these people came here during the “Summer of Love” and never left. And where, do you suppose, they came from? Yes, you’re correct! All of these fruits and nuts came from far and wide, throughout the United States! And, my offer of proof is that, California, of itself, could not have elected Obama!
How can they, as so-called intellectuals(as most leftists view themselves as), believe that load of BS they spew? At some point, you learn that only YOU have your best interests at heart and begin do for you and yours. You get up, dust yourself off and start putting one foot in front of the other on the way back down the road of life.
In other words, you stop believing in fairy tales(rainbows and unicorns, anyone?)and do the hardest thing imaginable:grow up. The problem isn’t mental illness...it’s the inherent juvenile mindset of the left.
Seriously though, your friends would do well in the long-run to get out from under that crushing debt load that is their mortgage and get into something smaller and more financially manageable.

I don’t live near there, but San Antonio is a beautiful city. Not as liberal as Austin but not as conservative as East Texas. Pluses are: close to Brook Army Medical Center if a family member gets life-threatening burns, inland far enough from the coast to avoid the full impact of a hurricane and the city rarely gets hit with tornadoes. (In Texas, that last one is a MAJOR plus!)
Now for the downside: significant Mexican-American population that makes some of them bleeding hearts for illegals, it can get into triple digits during the summer, and the major source of drinking water is the Edwards Aquifer and it is steadily being tapped out.
Contact a real estate agent in the San Antonio area if you are serious about moving there and he/she can give you further and more in-depth answers.

I have my own financial situation resulting from a huge medical bill and one time those particular friends were asking why all kinds of other sources were not helping or found responsible to help - most of which would have included them as taxpayers in some sense - and when I asked them why I should hold them at all responsible for my problem, they ended their questions about such solutions.
If you asked Californians how many of their fellow Californians need mental health care I'd bet over half of us would say that the answer is over half of us.
So, if you live in CA, think of 4 good friends and if they don’t need mental health care you do...
That means the other 80% are delusional.
