It's a tourist destination usually associated with beer-swilling Brits, but U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama is set to holiday with daughter Sasha on Spain's Costa del Sol.
Mother and daughter are due to travel to the resort of Marbella in southern Spain next week for a private trip with long-time family friends, the White House announced today.
But Barack Obama, who turns 49 on 4 August, will celebrate his birthday home alone while elder daughter Malia, 12, attends summer camp back in the States. The Obamas tour Ghana in 2009
Despite the unusual choice of holiday destination, Mrs Obama, who will be on the Costa del Sol between 4 and 8 August with nine-year-old Sasha, has reserved 30 rooms at a five-star hotel.

With a reputation as Spain's most exclusive hotel, room prices start at 250 euros (£210) for a standard double and rise up to 5,000 euros (£4,175) for a private villa within the gardens.The tourist spot has gained a reputation for being something of a party town
Mrs Obama and Sasha will be accompanied by an entourage of secret service personnel who will follow their every move.
The cost of housing the First Lady and her entourage could raise questions back in the U.S. over the use of taxpayers's money.
Mrs Obama will pay an official visit to Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia. Spanish newspapers today reported that the royal family had invited her to join them at their summer palace on Majorca in the Mediterranean.
The Obamas will spend four nights at Spain's most exclusive hotel, the Villa Padierna on the Costa del Sol near Marbella
However Mrs Obama will miss her husband's 49th birthday on August 4.

I clearly remember her saying Obama promised to spend more time with her and the girls if he was elected Pres.
I am sure we all know a man/husband somewhere that is that type of guy always on the go and not much of a homebody with the rest of the family.
Kinda appears like they put themselves/interests first and family second.
I can remember also saying she did the household stuff like fixing plumbing leaks because Obama was never home.
Sad because she genuinely seems to love him and I wonder if that is why she scowls so much.

One of the little girls, not sure which, has a nasty attitude towards her father too.
She’s social climbing. That’s what it is. Mingling with the royals is cool, but I daresay she goes as if she is a head of state in her own right. As an equal. No other reason really. The Obamas are living like a celebrity elevated to a responsible position.
Like an actress who is promoted to Goodwill Ambassador and then treats it like they’re newly appointed diplomats, Michelle is using her position as First Lady to run around the world, using her edge in to act as if she is some deputy President.

It is a slap at the Boy Scouts, but speaking as the grandma of a scout who is there, I’m just as glad he didn’t show. We didn’t shell out $2000 for him to be frisked for pocket knives and spending the better part of a day sitting around waiting for a political speech.
Never can I remember a first lady taking a personal trip with her child(ren) at the expense of our DOLLARS!! The taxpayer. I abhor Michelle and Obama...

When a wife takes the daughter in a normal family away when one daughter is at a camp I don’t think anything of it.
When a wife of a head of a superpower state is not with him on his birthday it is a matter of choice. They have armadas of jets and take airspace priority over almost everything else in the skies or seas. She is in Spain to get away from him. All I’m saying is that for people who travel around the country or world on a whim just to grab a bite to eat this is a little odd. Therefore, instead of making a true statement about him being a “very laid back guy”, in terms of his general hands-off and dithering approach to everything, I made a pun.
Either that or I just spent a few minutes defending a typo to nice people I will (unfortunately) never have the pleasure of meeting.
