WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama has turned her annual spring garden harvest into a plea for keeping healthier school lunch standards in place. Students who help plant the garden regularly return for the harvest. But on Thursday a few school nutrition directors also attended. A House bill due to be voted on soon would allow some schools to opt out of new standards that require more whole grains, fruits and vegetables in school lunches. The White House has threatened to veto the bill.

First Lady Michelle Obama says Jane Fonda is one of her role models, and that she admires her political savviness. During an interview with People Magazine, Obama listed "Hanoi Jane," as one of the people she would like to look and live like when she's 70 or 80 years old. "There’s Jane Fonda, a beautiful, engaged, politically savvy, sharp woman," Obama said. The comment is likely to enrage Vietnam War veterans who still remember how Fonda, now 76, went to North Vietnam in 1972 and was photographed sitting on an anti-aircraft battery. Fonda denounced U.S. military leaders as "war criminals"...

And while it was scary, as always, the whole affair was fairly low-key compared to past ghoulish celebrations around here: And then there was this “secret” after party in 2009 with Johnny Depp and the entire Alice in Wonderland cast: Lady M was festively attired in pumpkin and gray this year, as was Big Guy: My! 2009 v. 2013; we are getting gray, aren’t we? First Lady Michelle Obama’s pitch to voters last night relied on the premise that she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet. She spoke movingly about their early years--about how a young Barack Obama drove a car that was “rusted out" and found his furniture “in a dumpster,” how they both came from families that had to “scrape by.” Her fairy tale--however well-delivered--was one great, big, colorful lie. First Lady Michelle Obama has called on Congress to create a $400 million-a-year program to encourage the establishment of supermarkets in places she calls “food deserts.” The situation in these “food deserts,” as Mrs. Obama describes it, is quite dire indeed. American children are growing fat because their parents cannot get to a supermarket—to buy fruits and vegetables—without undergoing the hardship of boarding a bus or riding a taxi. As a consequence, food-desert-dwelling children are forced to eat fast food and junk procured at chain restaurants and convenience stores. In a March 10 speech, the first lady painted a sad...

With her husband facing electoral oblivion at next week's mid-terms, Michelle Obama is clearly prepared to do anything she can to help. Whether showing off her dance moves on Ellen was a politically astute gimmick, however, remains to be seen. The First Lady appeared on the daytime chat show just hours after her husband went on The Jon Stewart Show in a desperate attempt to woo younger voters. The President has been attacked for appearing on a comparatively lightweight show hosted by a comedian. At one point Stewart even called him 'dude', the first time word has been used...

Michelle Obama's nutrition bill fails in the House By ABBY PHILLIP | 9/30/10 4:31 PM EDT A bloc of progressive House Democrats resisted heavy White House lobbying and a 11th-hour push to broker a compromise on a child nutrition bill, ending chances that the legislation – a pet project of first lady Michelle Obama – would pass before the November midterm elections. At the root of the impasse: a proposed $2.2 billion cut in future funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food stamps for the poor. Despite personal appeals by the first lady, the Democrats balked at...

Last week Obama, whose chosen cause is fighting childhood obesity, told the nation's restaurants they need to change their recipes and offerings to make them healthier -- less sugar, cream, salt -- and more vegetables and fruits -- even if that means deleting a most popular dish or two and hurting sales. She also praised inner-city Detroit liquor stores that were offering vegetables along with their bottled, fermented fare. But now comes a new Gallup Poll of more than 176,000 Americans showing that, in fact, it's.... ...not access to vegetables at all that's keeping citizens from downing the recommended 48...

President Barack Obama – and first lady Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha – will spend the weekend in Panama City, Fla., during their first trip together as a family to the Gulf Coast since the oil spill
disaster, the White House announced Thursday. They are expected to arrive late morning Saturday and will be staying until early afternoon Sunday. While there, Obama Saturday will make a statement about the Gulf recovery effort after he and Michelle Obama will join area small business owners and Navy Secretary Ray Mabus for a roundtable discussion on the matter.
