Some oil has been consumed by microorganisms that live in the gulf and feed on naturally occurring oil leaks. Nobody has figured out the rate at which oil is consumed by these microorganisms or if they have had a population surge resulting from the BP spill. Since all of these factors are unknowns the eminent scientists have apparently decided to ignore them.
