Shareholders weigh in on Target and Best Buy’s political giving

Target and its corporate retail cousin Best Buy are continuing to suffer fallout from donations to a Minnesota group that backed a gay-marriage opponent for governor. On top of organized consumer boycotts and public pressure campaigns, some of the retail giant's investors are up in arms, according to the Associated Press.

The anti-Target effort among consumer activists, meanwhile, continues to draw a strong online following, with petitions and viral videos — even though one cable network has rejected a national ad buy from liberal group MoveOn.org urging a Target boycott. MoveOn's political action committee has, however, placed a video of an impromptu musical protest at one Target store on YouTube, where it has already garnered more than half a million views. These high-profile pushbacks have caught the attention of a trio of institutional shareholders in Target and Best Buy — Walden Asset Management, Trillium Asset Management Corp., and Calvert Asset Management Co. — who each filed resolutions voicing concern.

"A good corporate political contribution policy should prevent the kind of debacle Target and Best Buy walked into," Trillium vice president Shelley Alpern told the AP. "We expect companies to evaluate candidates based upon the range of their positions — not simply one area — and assess whether they are in alignment with their core values. But these companies' policies are clearly lacking that."

Liberal groups have been protesting outside of Target's headquarters or stores almost daily since it was revealed that Target Corp. donated $150,000 to pro-business group MN Forward. The business group is backing Tom Emmer for governor of Minnesota, where Target is headquartered.

I’m going to start compiling a list of all businesses who support sexual deviancy and begin my own boycott. If they cater to homos, I’m outta there.

I will be doing more business with Target and Best Buy. What a silly connectivity for these idiot libs to make...there is at least 3 degrees of separation between Target and the anti-freak marriage candidate these libfascists don’t like.

Man/woman traditional marriage proponents need to step up to the plate and support Target/Best Buy. If they don't, they deserve what they get. oppression!

Businesses cater to “sexual deviancy” and other liberal causes to curry favor with Democrats, who (if in power at any level of government) can use their political power to persecute them into oblivion. Consider it like paying off your local racketeers with the criminal gang NOT to suffer robbery and murder this week. Plenty of small businesses in rough or ethnic neighborhoods (Italian, Mexican, Vietnamese, et cetera) do the latter. Big or politically visible businesses make similar payments to politicians and their pet causes—like global warming and sexual deviancy. It makes liberal politicians favor them enough to allow them to continue to exist...until next week or month or election cycle or whatever.

Are these A-holes boycotting any business that contributed to Øbama since he also is against gay marriage? These people are sick, demented hypocrites.

Damned if they do damned if they don’t. Big business ought to have learned by now that it can only get burned by the Rats, and we have a bolder crop of Pubs coming up today.

Good, now the libs don’t like Target either. Target also refuses to allow The Salvation Army to collect donations during the Christmas season, in front of their stores.

I refuse to shop at Target until this policy is changed.

I am so sick of these queers trying to control everything. I have hardly ever shopped at Target, but I will now and will encourage all my friends and family to shop there as well. This is ridiculous.

Well, I know where I will be doing my shopping next time I need electronics or general merchandise. Thanks for the post.

This is ridiculous - a donation is given to a business group that happens to support a candidate that supports marriage and that puts people up in arms to boycott? Insane.

“Well, I know where I will be doing my shopping next time I need electronics or general merchandise. Thanks for the post.”

Well, you might want to know that Target also refuses to acknowledge Christmas. It’s seasons greetings for them, and the Salvation Army cannot post in front of their store.

I won’t step into Target — actually have NEVER let my shadow darken their doorway, because Target will not let the Salvation Bell Ringers ring their bells and stand by their kettles at Christmas time.

They will NEVER see my $$ — Wal-Mart will get it because Wal-Mart allows Salvation Army bellringers at Christmas time.

Funny how the press never mentions the boycott of Home Depot due to their support of gay causes, and their presence at gay festivals. They have a table for kids to participate in crafts. (I hope that’s all the participate in!)

Anyway, I won’t shop at Home Depot now. If you want more info, I believe the boycott is being promoted by the American Family Association.

Does Target still give money to Planned Parenthood? I know they used to.
