Wish a guy like Joe Miller was running for the Senate in Arizona, we got stuck with two shiny turds to choose from instead.

Thanks. I don’t know where the outstanding precincts are; if it’s Miller country or Murkowski territory.

With 61% of the vote counted, Miller has 51.56% of the vote to Murkowski’s 48.54%. His lead actually declined slightly percentage wise when the last 40 precincts were reported. As best I can tell those precincts were from Sitka (6 or 7), Juneau (2), a bunch of Anchorage precincts, some from Mat-su, etc. The precinct numbers I’m looking at indicate that there are fewer than a dozen Anchorage precincts out. There are still a few precincts from the Mat Valley & Fairbanks to report, but they are mostly in.

However, there are still 43 out of 46 precincts left from House District 6 (Southeast) PLUS note the following outstanding precincts:
Kodiak: 4 of 14 have reported
Dillingham: 2 of 22 have reported
Bethel: 0 of 27 have reported
Nome: 3 of 27 have reported
Kotzebue: 1 of 21 has reported

All I’m saying is that like many Alaska races, this one isn’t over yet.

Would those 43 precincts left, from House District 6, be in strong "Conservative" areas for Miller or in Mukie territory?

Not only that — I’m looking at the precincts that have reported — looks like at least 1/3 of the Anchorage precincts are in. Am listening, also, to the returns as reported on KSKA (the local Anchorage public radio station). You can just tell that they are “shocked! shocked!” at what’s happening. They keep saying “We can’t tell where they’re from.” Well, if they’d just look at what’s being reported on the State’s election returns web site, they would know.

Earlier in the evening, they reported that Lisa was supposed to win handily in Anchorage and of course in Juneau and the rest of Southeast. I wonder — don’t they know that Juneau & Southeast are the homes of lots of registered Democrats who can’t even vote in the Republican primary.

There are still lots of Bush precincts that are out, however.

Remember when they “found” all the ballots that put Hammond over 20+ years ago?

I honestly don’t know the answer to your question.

The latest returns reported (288 precincts) added 21 to the previous report and Miller’s %age went from 51.46% to 51.71% — the %age of precincts reporting went from 61% to 65.8%.

Those 21 precincts were about half from Anchorage (where Murkowski was “supposed” to dominate) plus 2 from Dillingham, 4 from Bethel, 5 from Nome.

I suspect one surprise (among many) of the evening will be how well Miller has done in Anchorage.

I’m guessing that his numbers in the Mat-Su Valley may not have been as high as expected.

This is purely a guess on my part.

Miller, Joe 43,458 52%
Murkowski , Lisa (i) 40,577 48%

Joe is up 2,881 with 288 precincts reporting out of 438. I think this is his biggest lead of the night.

First let me apologize for misinformation. House District 6 is NOT Southeast — my mistake was in just looking at its State Senator who is from Angoon in SE (the panhandle) of Alaska. But it’s one of those huge, huge Senate districts — probably bigger than New England. The District 6 representative is from Beaver, which is in the eastern part of Alaska — Yukon river territory, Ft. Yukon, Chalkytsik, etc. It’s very, very, very rural — mostly Athabascan villages, such as Ft. Yukon.

Anyway, the next batch of about 25 precincts has now reported AND 14 of those were from District 6. So here’s a summary:
Previous pcts reporting: 288, or 65.8%
Now reporting, 313, or 71.5%
Miller’s previous percentage of the vote: 51.71%
Miller’s new percentage of the vote: 51.83%
Miller’s new margin: 3140 votes

Miller now looks to be up by almost 2,000 votes. Two precincts and absentees are still out, but Miller seems very likely to win.
