Some Evangelicals on Defensive over partnering with Glenn Beck
CNN Belief Blog ^ | Aug. 27, 2010 | Dan Gilgoff

A handful of prominent evangelical activists are defending their decision to attend television host Glenn Beck's conservative rally in Washington this weekend after some Christians complained that evangelicals shouldn't be partnering with Beck because of his Mormon faith.

"There is no need to 'de-Christianize' each other over the matter," wrote Jim Garlow, an influential California pastor, in a five-page memo this week arguing that evangelicals can attend Beck's rally and partner with the television and radio personality in good conscience.

"Glenn Beck is being used by God - mightily," Garlow wrote in the memo, which was obtained by CNN. "The left loves to slam him and do so viscerally and often with vulgarities. Glenn is not perfect... But his expose on America's sins is stellar."

In Glenn Becks’ book called “An Inconvenient Book” he talks about meeting Tania and how he knew that they would be together forever. He says there was just on problem: She didn’t. “See, Tania is smart, way smarter than me. She understood that unless we shared a common faith, unless we had something deep, meaningful, and spiritual to help guide and bind us, we’d never make it.” At the time he says all he wanted was sex with her so he says he would have agreed to almost anything. Then he says: “But an amazing thing happened as Tania and I went from church to church, “shopping” for a faith: I actually started to enjoy it.” “The more we looked, the more sense her plan made, and now, years later, our commitment to God has strengthened our commitment to each other.”

"The Catholics think the protestants are going to hell and vice versa, and both thing the Mormons are, and none of them will have any say on the matter for Jesus will be the one who decides."

I agree with what you say. I have a friend who talked of the "Invisible Church" He said that within EVERY denomination there is the "Invisible Church" It is the people within EVERY denomination who actually live the life Jesus asked us to live. I agree with him as I know so many good people who live Christian lives in EVERY denomination and many people in EVERY denomination who do not. So it is the "Invisible Church" within each that belong to Christ.

I last heard Daisy about 20+ years ago...

The Osbornes wrote the book on faith in God...

If you have never heard of them either you are too young...

I think they might be afraid that he is pulling their fleeced flocks away from the heretical “prosperity gospel”

Gee speaking of money...

Maybe you could explain to the rest of us why Beck told people at the rally to “Tithe 10%” ???

Also WHERE were they to “tithe” to ???

Because many Christians consider it their duty to their church to tithe, to support the church financially.

Also WHERE were they to “tithe” to ???

I thought that was fairly obvious, each to his own church. Do you suggest that he was asking people at the rally, Christian and non-Christian alike to send money to his professed church? When financial guru Dave Ramsey tells people they need to tithe, do you have the same suspicions of him as well?

I would assume to their churches, which is completely biblical.

Many of these "prosperity churches" however, cajole their flocks into donating large sums of "seed money", over and above their tithes, to them with promises that God will reward them monetarily or materially for their "gifts". There is NO scriptural basis for this and, it preys on those least likely to be able to afford it (i.e. the poor and those on fixed incomes), kind of like sub-prime loans.

their poorer members are to tithe rather than eat...

Go on ask me for my source...

Teacher,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”

“Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us. I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward. Mark 9:38

I think you are mistakenly assuming that I support Mormonism. I do not. I am a conservative Presbyterian (PCA), and I have seen too many people, my own mother among them, who have been financially devastated by these hucksters, and have had to help many of them with emergency funds so their families can eat, despite their foolishness. I do not believe Beck was telling them to support the Mormon church, as others in this thread have also mentioned.

Well here ya go...

From the mormon Spring General Conference, 2005..

"Among those who do not sacrifice there are two extremes: one is the rich, gluttonous man who won't and the other is the poor, destitute man who believes he can't. But how can you ask someone who is starving to eat less? Is there a level of poverty so low that sacrifice should not be expected or a family so destitute that paying tithing should cease to be required?

One reason the Lord illustrates doctrines with the most extreme circumstances is to eliminate excuses. If the Lord expects even the poorest widow to pay her mite, where does that leave all others who find that it is not convenient or easy to sacrifice?

No bishop, no missionary should ever hesitate or lack the faith to teach the law of tithing to the poor. The sentiment of "They can't afford to" needs to be replaced with "They can't afford not to."

One of the first things a bishop must do to help the needy is ask them to pay their tithing. Like the widow,

if a destitute family is faced with the decision of paying their tithing or eating, they should pay their tithing." (Elder Lynn Robbins, Mormon Leader)

If you answer these questions in the affirmative it should show you just how far off your “Jesus” and “god” are from the way we Christians view Him.

Sir Ed:

Let me ask a simple question. Which would you love more, (1) a father who insisted on keeping his children subservient and distant, never sharing his financial wherewithal or wisdom, or (2) one who did everything in his power to love and support his children, bringing them, as they became ready, into his world, and helping them grow in stature to become like him?

Along those lines, one more question. What do the terms "joint heirs with Christ" and "glorified together" mean? (Romans 8:17)

If you answer logically, perhaps you will see that the Mormon view of Deity is far more Biblical than the pagan Nicean view.

Kind regards

Lets ask one of the mormon “profits” why the mormon women are to tithe...

Tithing

Quote, “President Hinckley outlined four ways young women can ensure virtue as a staple in their lives: prayer, study, tithing, and church attendance.” (Deseret News Sunday 3/25/07)

“Does not accept Jesus as the savior and redeemer” ... I don't know what you are smoking, but it Can't be legal, as for prophets, polygamy and the rest... have you read the bible? FYI, the urim an thummim were seer stones used to see the future and receive revelation. They were worn in the breastplate of Aaron by the high priest...

I have NEVER heard Glenn Beck ask for “seed money”. Nor have I ever heard him suggest tithing to anyone other than their local church.

Ozzy Osborne, the rock star. He and his family did a reality show on MTV called “The Osbornes” Note his name is spelled with an ‘e’ at the end. T.L. Osborn spells his last name without the ‘e’. It was a joke.
