A New Look for the Oval Office
New York Times ^ | August 31, 2010 | SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

Posted on 08/31/2010 8:55:44 AM PDT by reaganaut1

The Oval Office has gotten a makeover.

When President Obama addresses the nation on Iraq on Tuesday night, he will do so from newly redecorated digs. The look, which includes new and reupholstered furniture and new paint and wallpaper, is more modern and tends toward neutral hues of brown and taupe, rather than the gold and yellow tones favored by his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Gone is the sunburst rug that Mr. Bush loved so much; designed by his wife, Laura, he used to say it evoked a spirit of optimism. In its place is a more muted, mostly wheat and cream-colored carpet featuring the presidential seal in the center, and ringed on its edge with five quotations selected by Mr. Obama – four from former presidents (Lincoln, Kennedy and both Roosevelts) and one from the Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Bush’s yellow brocade couches have been replaced with two custom-made sofas of brown cotton that resembles velvet. They face a boxy table, fashioned from American walnut and mica, that features a fruit bowl – not flowers – as its centerpiece. There is a lone navy blue pillow on one of the couches, which pulls in the blue from some new, modern table lamps.

The new wallpaper is striped, gold and yellow, but the pictures – portraits of Lincoln and Washington – have remained, as has the grandfather clock. Mr. Obama reupholstered Mr. Bush’s two mahogany chairs and kept the desk, called the Resolute, that every chief executive since Rutherford B. Hayes — with the exception of Johnson, Nixon and Ford — has used.

The makeover was not done at taxpayer expense; the White House said the costs were covered by the White House Historical Association, a non-profit group

Why did it take $2 million to redecorate one room? Was the furniture hand-carved and custom-built one-of-a-kind? Were the carpets specially woven of pure gold and silver threads? Were the chairs upholstered from skin of unborn chamois? If not, then why $2 million?

It looks like a place where Obama can take a nap.

And, why not take a nap? He is just exhausted from all the vacations, lobster dinners and redecorating the oval office - whew! And, isn’t all the heavy lifting over? The man’s entitled to a little nap/s

I am reminded of my father...he was known for wearing navy with brown shoes. My mother used to have a fit every time he would do that. I think Dad did it deliberately just to annoy Mom.

It looks to me like zer0 set up the two arm chairs to be in the "echo spot" so that he can hear whoever is sitting there from his desk even if they are whispering and think he can't hear them.

Every oval room has the same acoustical phenomenon at the foci (right, you FR engineers out there?)

It appears that Michelle had nothing to do with the change.

I had read his redecorations were to the tune of 2 millions dollars, such a waste from someone who barely spends any time there.”

He won’t be there very much longer, either.

Sure is a gigantic display from Barry & Michelle that THEY are getting THEIR reparations, isn’t it.

They drained all the light from the room.

Just like they have done to the rest of the country.

The beautiful architectural features of this room, the original paintings and classic furniture, and obozo/co. comes up with a navy/brown/beige color scheme. The room looks dull, and the furniture looks like rental.

With all their resources, they could have done better. Thank God Manchelle didn't have a free hand at decorating..remember the black liberation red/black widow spider colors of the dress she wore in Chicago post-inaugeration?

But, most of all, this country is in a recession/depression and this selfish, insensitive socialist decides to re-decorate....

This took way too fucking long.
Can you identify all these retarded things? No? Well then, you’ve clearly spent too much of this Century doing work or “raising your kids” or whatever, instead of following “memes” on Animated-GIF message boards loosely related to some video game or sports team.

2. Taking down the Washington Monument.

I agree.
The wallpapered doors really stand out.....you expect them to start “peeling” from the edge of the doors any minute.....

But, I really thought it was gonna be worse.

Purple and green stripes.
