Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer and her Republican opponent Carly Fiorina will square off Wednesday night in the only debate scheduled so far in a race that polls show is a toss up between the two women.
The hour-long event at St. Mary’s College in Moraga begins at 7 p.m. It will be televised on CBS affiliates up and down the state, including on KTTV in Los Angeles. The debate is being sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle and KQED public radio and will be streamed live on both sponsors’ web sites. C-Span is also televising the forum.

I missed the closing as the dog insisted on her walk (ha), but I thought Fiorina did a very good job overall — much better than I expected. As a CA voter, I will have no trouble voting for Fiorina now.

Really? I’ve lived here some 56 years now and all the new arrivals I’ve met seem to be well versed in liberalism before they show up here. They are looking for a ‘home’ for their ‘progressiveness.’
And for the record, as time goes by I get more and more conservative — how to explain that!
Who was the last California Senator to fit your description of “A true Constitutional Conservative”?
What worries me is that Carly Fiorina ran her company into the ground — would she be any better in politics? Or is she just talk? What do you think? (I didn’t watch the debate and don’t live in CA, so have no dog in the fight now!)

Am not in Ca. either but interested to see how this does play out. Firina isn’t all that impressive but I think if she gets this our guys in Washington can keep her in line, but who knows really since Cal. is so liberal she will surely want to satisfy those who keep her in office.
Hopefully she is not all talk...but as with Mass. Brown...people do know what they are going to get in Fiorina and likely the best that can be expected from liberal Ca.
Where my friiend lives, Carmel, it’s an easy soft life for the most part. In some ways detached from the rest of Ca. as is highly tourist and elitist community. She thinks Scott Brown is fabulous....but is not in tune with his voting record. Allot of people vote for how a politician presents themselves...appearances matter unfortunately.

Agreed...politics are a nasty business as we all know, but I think the difference is the crookedness is right out in the open today...and that without shame or fear of consequences because there are none.... short of the politicians themselves taking down who they determine is the fall guy for whatever might be revealed...and the bus rolls over them then.
Fiddling with the tax code in a permanent, lowering way, in accompaniment with the necessary spending cuts, is precisely what we need. A two-year ‘holiday’ is nothing more than an ineffective fake to the right, however.

Conservative Senators from CA, Hmmmm...George Murphy might qualify. Hayakawa did OK, considering his background, That's about it for my lifetime, and I voted for Goldwater....

The last Republican Senator in California was John Seymour, appointed to fill the seat Pete Wilson vacated in 1991 when he became governor of California. Seymour was defeated in 1992 by Dianne Feinstein.

I agree that Nixon was hardly a conservative, but there was a much larger left in the Republican party in his day, and he was more toward the centre—witness his administration’s declared neutrality and covert support when James Buckley, running as an independent, unseated a liberal Republican senator in NY.
