Oval Office rug gets history wrong
Washington post ^ | September 4, 2010 | Jamie Stiehm

A mistake has been made in the Oval Office makeover that goes beyond the beige.

President Obama's new presidential rug seemed beyond reproach, with quotations from Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. woven along its curved edge.

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." According media reports, this quote keeping Obama company on his wheat-colored carpet is from King.

Except it's not a King quote. The words belong to a long-gone Bostonian champion of social progress. His roots in the republic ran so deep that his grandfather commanded the Minutemen at the Battle of Lexington.

For the record, Theodore Parker is your man, President Obama. Unless you're fascinated by antebellum American reformers, you may not know of the lyrically gifted Parker, an abolitionist, Unitarian minister and Transcendentalist thinker who foresaw the end of slavery, though he did not live to see emancipation. He died at age 49 in 1860, on the eve of the Civil War

That's about one of the drabbest rooms I've ever seen outside of the cells in Marion, Illinois.

"Drab" spelled backwards is "barf".

You can really get taken to the cleaners in the decorating market if the sky is the limit. I know a woman who hit it big when she sold her company for millions when the cell phone market just got started. She showed me her redecorated house and said the trim on the sofa cost $100. a foot (not a yard). That was the trim sewed on the fabric of the sofa, she didn’t tell me how much the fabric on the sofa cost.

yeah, she blew all her millions in a fairly short time.

They’re around the margin of the rug. If you look carefully in the posted image, you can see letters running around the edge of the thing.

I was thinking it looks like one of those conference rooms you see at hotels.

You know, The Washington Room, The Virginia Room, etc.

That is fascinating about two of the quotes. Just goes to show Obama owes more to his mother’s Unitarian roots than he acknowledges.

Real estate agents advise using neutral colors like beige when you're preparing the residence for occupancy by a new but unknown occupant. :-)

My immediate thought! I'm glad for once I actually read through a thread before posting my comment to it. ;)

“chic”? Give me a break! Those fuzzy sofas are nouveau trailer park IMHO.

I don’t hate the wallpaper but everything else, especially that coffee table, needs to go. I saw other photos of the new drapes, they are awful.

LOL!

no visual reminders of the current occupants...

we can only hope that Obama will similarly leave no permanent trace of his presence.

Is Obozo technically Beige, since his alleged Mother was White? That might explain all the Beige Colors, even to the preferred Ice Cream Color!
Just a thought!
