Why No Interest In Mike Castle's Corrupt Lobbyist Problems?
riehlworldview ^ | Sunday September 12, 2010

I recall the Standard's John McCormack getting pushed into the gutter once, shame he hasn't had the wherewithal to lift himself out of it, yet. It strikes me as odd that some are so willing to assist Mike Castle in what amounts to the politics of personal destruction against his challenger, Christine O'Donnell, yet none of these supposedly Right-side publications have any interest at all in exposing Mike Castle's alleged corruption during his many years in Congress.

In 2006, the Washington Post pointed out the cost to taxpayers of sweetheart deals struck between elected officials like Castle and lobbying firms who offer what amount to kick backs in campaign donations. People have asked how Castle became a millionaire on such a relatively small salary. This may have something to do with it.

Each legislative season, corporate executives and lobbyists quietly draft hundreds of bills to suspend tariffs. Over time, the changes cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue, a Washington Post analysis of U.S. trade data found. Most of the tariff suspensions involve obscure chemicals and dyes, but many other products show up, including boilers for nuclear reactors, green peanuts, child potty seats, unicycles -- even chocolate coatings for laxatives.

Yet, Castle has gone without scrutiny despite an established pattern of doing this very thing. He must really be courting friends in the press, or something. But for years, a Delaware blog has been pointing out Castle's habit of allegedly doing lobbyists favors that cost taxpayer's big dollars in exchange for campaign donations.

Since 1993, Mike Castle has been the sole sponsor of 103 bills which apparently were intended to provide relief to certain chemical and agribusiness companies from customs duties imposed by the federal government on the importation of certain chemicals. During the same period of Mike Castle’s congressional career, the chemical industry, including some (if not all) of the companies directly benefiting from these Castle-sponsored bills, contributed over $106,000 to his campaign committee.

Here's a look at just one year. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, it would seem. It's all there in a series of posts beginning here. Moving on to here ... here ... here ... here and here. McCormack can look through the archive himself. Or, maybe he can only see stories handed to him by GOP operatives supporting Mike Castle from down in the gutter where he looks to live.

Let’s focus on the current Congress, the 109th. Since the beginning of this Congress in January 2005, Mike Castle has been the main sponsor of 63 bills. Of those 63 bills, 29 are pieces of legislation which, if passed, would suspend a tariff on a specific chemical, or extend a pre-existing tariff suspension on a chemical. You can review Mike Castle’s most recent legislation here.

Apparently, as part of the process for this type of legislation, the United States International Trade Commission reviews these proposed tariff suspensions to determine the cost imposed on the US Treasury if the tariff is suspended. Of the 29 tariff suspension bills, Mike Castle sponsored, I was able to locate 18 memos on-line from the Commission, each of which discussed the effect of suspension of a particular tariff.

$120,000,000 to the chemcial industry. CHA-CHING!!

Based on our own government’s estimates, just these 18 of Mike Castle’s tariff suspension bills would cost the US Treasury over $21,000,000 in lost tariff revenue. I know this is a rough extrapolation, but if you take the average lost tariff revenue of these 18 ($1,166,666) and multiply that by the 103 bills like this Mike Castle has sponsored, it appears Mike Castle has provided over $120,000,000 of benefit to his chemical industry contributors. To see one of these Commission memos on one of Mike Castle’s bills, click here.

These bills are, in essence, earmarks to Mike Castle’s contributors. Isn’t that the same kind of pay-for-favors activities that is behind the Abramoff scandal? Shouldn’t someone in the main stream media be digging into this? Don’t any of the News Journal reporters aspire to win a Pulitzer Prize? Drew Volturo, you seemed hungry. What about our sassy bloggers?

(....the sound of crickets chirping in the distance…)

Okay forget about the papers and the bloggers – What about us? Shouldn’t we have a problem with having a Congressman who is basically on the payroll of DuPont and Syngenta?

Don’t we have any better uses for the $120 million Michael Castle saw fit to give away to the drug companies? Isn't America still a Democracy?

Oh, I get it. We should help Castle smear O’Donnell, meanwhile look the other way when it comes to Castle himself.

This proves the bias you pro-Castle people have. You don’t care about what’s true.

Just come out and admit it—you’re against O’Donnell because you want Cap and Trade to pass. Or you just love the ruling class.

If this is wrong, then prove it by spending as much time dredging up actual corruption by Mike Castle.

Um....dude...have you ever heard of a little company called DuPont? It’s based in Delaware. Do you seriously believe Christine O’Donnell would not try to help DuPont if she is elected? She would get destroyed in the next election if she did. Even Jim DeMint would do whatever it takes to support the major employer in the state.

If this is your best shot at Mike Castle you won’t beat him.

Republican Rep. Mike Castle, running for the open Senate seat in Delaware, doesn’t plan on following Murkowski’s lead. Castle’s campaign is planning to air negative ads against his primary opponent Christine O’Donnell, National Journal’s Hotline reports.

“We’re not just going to sit by and let her destroy Mike Castle,” a Castle campaign source told Hotline On Call.

Hotline On Call reported that Castle has purchased about $180K worth of air time from Aug. 31 to Sept. 6.

http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2010/09/castle_planning.php

Castle is preparing for what looks like it will be an onslaught of ads from the Tea Party Express in support of O’Donnell. The group, which backed Joe Miller in his upset of Lisa Murkowski (R) in AK SEN last week, is vowing to spend at least $250K on this airing ads in Delaware. Chris Good at The Atlantic got his hands on one of the ads, but, as of now, the Tea Party Express has not aired it.

Other Republicans are also going after O’Donnell. The Delaware GOP has been releasing statements against her all week and went up with a new website —
www.RealChristine.com — on Thursday.

“Are you kidding me?!” Mike Castle has done it again! Christine O’Donnell (R)

August 12th, 2010 2:25 pm ET
By Angel Clark, Delaware Elections 2010 Examiner
..

He’s done it again!

Mike Castle, my Republican primary opponent, has yet again voted with the Democrats on another $26 billion spending bill, (House Roll Call 518). This summer, Castle has voted with the Democrats on just about every bloated spending, big government bill.

It just doesn’t make sense ...

Previous stimulus bills have failed, yet career politicians like Castle don’t seem to grasp that we can’t spend our way to recovery, nor can we tax our way to prosperity.

It’s like a broken record. Mike Castle has again scurried back to Washington to do the bidding of Nancy Pelosi.

The best thing the government can do to begin REAL economic recovery is to get out of the way of the small business owner and the entrepreneur.

Yet, career politicians like Castle continue to push failed “stimulus” spending bills - this time, calling the legislation “a new Stimulus.” But we’re not fooled because we know the first so-called “Stimulus” was an $862 billion orgy of over-spending and over-borrowing.

It’s time to STOP THE MADNESS brought on by Castle and Pelosi! With your support, I will go to the U.S. Senate and represent YOUR interests ... not those of the special interest groups living high on the hog on the taxpayers’ dime.

Together, you and I can push back against the Washington elite and work towards real economic recovery by lowering taxes and cutting the red-tape that is strangling most small businesses.

But I need your help.

We’re gaining in the polls and momentum is increasing everyday as local and national networks spotlight this DE US Senate special election. We need your continued support to cross the finish line strong.

Please donate $25, or $50, or even $100 or more. Help me fight to restore America’s vitality and greatness.

We’re contending with two multi-millionaire candidates who have million dollar campaign machines behind them - and we’re polling strong!! This is because we ensure that every dollar we spend has a multiplier effect.

It won’t take millions for us to win this race, but it will take money ... so please give generously as we sprint towards election day ... which is just five weeks away!!

Oh get over yourself. I hate cap and trade. I hate that Mike Castle voted for it. But it didnt pass and it never will. Meanwhile Castle also voted against the Porkulus and against the FinReg bill (and he authored many good amendments to that bill, some of which actually passed, yet he still voted against the final bill), and against ObamaCare. He has been a good Congressman FOR HIS STATE.

Delaware will not elect a far-right, lying, deadbeat, lawsuit-happy loser whose campaign consists of spreading horrible untrue personal rumors about her opponent and claiming he is corrupt. O’Donnell is a person of bad character whom no serious conservative should support.

Wary of tea party, GOP attacks Senate candidate
The Associated Press

Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 | 12:34 a.m.

Delaware Republicans call Senate hopeful Christine O’Donnell a liar who “could not be elected dog catcher” in a fierce attack that underscores GOP fears of the tea party-backed candidate knocking off top recruit Rep. Mike Castle and winning the nomination.

Stunned by tea partier Joe Miller’s upset of Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Republicans are taking no chances in Delaware, which holds its primary Sept. 14. The party sees Castle, the state’s lone congressman since 1993, as the best candidate for the seat long held by Vice President Joe Biden.

Republicans circulated audio of a testy, 22-minute interview that O’Donnell had with radio station WGMD on Thursday. Party officials also have said she inflated her resume and made flat-out untrue statements while being dogged by questions about tax liens and foreclosures. Castle says she has misrepresented his record.

“She’s not a viable candidate for any office in the state of Delaware,” state party chairman Tom Ross, who is backing Castle, said in a telephone interview. “She could not be elected dog catcher.”

onyx: The polls open here in about 36 hours. This is all an attempt to distract us from the GOTV effort. Castle's forty year record is well documented and it is very well known here in DE. Don't waste your emotional energy with this crap now. Do what you can to help Christine. What matters most now is personal appeals to Delaware Republicans. If you know anyone in DE or people who might know people in DE, call them. Even if you can't do that, you can make calls for her by clicking below:

Castle’s a RINO. He’ll vote just like a Dim would. I support O’Donnell the Conservative. If she loses, the Dims still have a vote on their side but we send a message to Ruling Class GOPers that we’re not taking their sh*t anymore (as if the message isn’t clear yet).

His father was a patent lawyer for DuPont, a firm so central to the city that it was long known in Wilmington simply as “the company.”

Castle is president of the Republican Main Street Partnership

The Republican Main Street Partnership (RMSP) is a group of moderate members of the United States Republican Party. They tend away from the dominant social conservatism of many Republicans and towards a moderate fiscal conservatism and limited government to a degree. The group is the rough equivalent of the Blue Dog Democrats.

The Republican Main Street Partnership was formed following the 1994 House elections, in which conservative Republicans were swept into power. An informal discussion group formed by Representatives Nancy Johnson, Steve Gunderson, and Fred Upton later became somewhat of an organized bloc with the intent on representing the moderate wing of the Republican Party. The partnership is currently composed of moderates such as Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe; some members would fit most of the criteria of a conservative, such as Thad McCotter, Dean Heller, and Brian Bilbray. Members of the group are often labeled as RINO’s by conservatives and are often challenged in Republican primaries by the Club for Growth.

The Republican Main Street Partnership has allied with other moderate Republican groups, including Christine Todd Whitman’s It’s My Party Too, Ann Stone’s Republicans for Choice, the Log Cabin Republicans, the Republican Majority For Choice, The Wish List, Republicans for Environmental Protection, and the Kansas Traditional Republican Majority.

In May 2005, the Republican Main Street Partnership helped pass the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act in the House Of Representatives; 50 Republicans voted in support of the bill, which passed 238-194.

in September 2005, liberal columnist E.J. Dionne named Castle as one of four lawmakers capable of leading an anticorruption reform of the Republican Party. Castle is a member of various moderate/liberal Republican Organizations, such as Republicans For Environmental Protection, The Republican Majority For Choice, Republicans For Choice and Christine Todd Whitman’s Its My Party Too.

******

A town hall style meeting organized by Rep. Castle to discuss health care reform with constituents was featured on the Drudge Report with the headline “VIDEO: Congressman’s town hall erupts over Obama birth certificate...”.

The Congressman was heckled and booed after calmly responding to a protester, “If you’re referring to the President there, he is a citizen of the United States.”

The Delaware News Journal has reported that Castle’s next town hall meeting would be “YouTube-proof” and that the Representative had decided to talk with Delawareans randomly selected by telephone rather than in person.

Particularly since he went on the public payroll just one year out of Law School... worked 1 year as Asst. Atty. General and went to State Rep, then State Senator, then Lt. Gov. then Governor, then House of Representatives... He hasn’t missed feeding at the public trough since one year out of school...

That’s the guy who calls Christine the professional candidate... Geeeesh!

Try a few of these on for size...

Why Christine?

Side By Side Comparison of Christine O’Donnell & Mike Castle:
Jobs Voted for Nancy Pelosi’s cap and tax energy scheme which would kill 6,117 Delaware jobs and also voted for the job-killing minimum wage hike. Believes jobs are created when businesses are freed from endless taxes and bureaucratic red tape.
Security Voted with liberals in Congress to handicap our intelligence and military agencies. Believes terrorism is an act of war requiring the full force of our intelligence and military resources rather than granting terrorists precious Constitutional rights and outsourcing our foreign policy to the U.N.
Debt Voted to increase the national debt & consistently supports Washington’s reckless spending. Believes heaping trillions in debt on the backs of our grandchildren is immoral and that Congress is elected to make the hard choices to preserve our nation’s future prosperity.
Taxes Voted to keep the death tax, to increase taxes by $3,100 on every American family, and to remove the protection of the middle class from dramatic tax increases originally intended to hit <200 of the richest Americans. Will fight to remove the crushing tax burden faced by American families and businesses and dramatically simplify the tax code.
Life Voted to subject children to out-of-state abortions without consent of parents, voted to use U.S. funds to support Planned Parenthood at home and abroad, supports human cloning, and sponsored the bill to destroy, exploit and experiment on unborn children as scientific lab-rats. Strongly believes in protecting the sanctity of life at ALL stages.
Energy Voted to ban exploration for American energy, keeping gas prices high, to prohibit drilling in America’s land and waters, and to ban building new oil refineries. Supports a market-based approach to energy solutions that will keep competition high and energy prices low.
Values Voted to allow liberal activist judges to strip “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance, against the Constitutional protection of marriage, and against educational choice for parents with children in failing schools. Believes our country was founded on core values of faith, family and freedom and will fight to defend those values. Will always fight for maximum choice for parents about where to educate their kids, including private, parochial and charter schools or in the home.
Spending Voted to spend billions on failed stimulus packages & bailouts. Believes unrestrained government spending is eroding our freedom, destroying our economy and ceding our sovereignty to foreign debt- holders like China.
Accountability Voted to protect 103 outrageous pork projects that would lead to corruption and waste. Denounces corrupt pork-barrel politics, including earmarks, and will fight for increased transparency and performance information for every Federal program.
Healthcare Remained undecided about Pelosi’s government takeover of healthcare until 4 days before vote. Believes that the solution to the healthcare crisis is less government meddling in the doctor/patient relationship, more competition in the insurance market and more choice for families about their health plan.
Gun Control Received an “F” rating from the NRA, indicating a strong anti-2nd Amendment position. Christine’s strong support of 2nd Amendment rights has earned her an “A” rating from the NRA.
