A new comprehensive national survey shows that independent voterswho voted for Barack Obama by a 52%-to-44% margin in the 2008 presidential electionare now moving strongly in the direction of the Republican Party. The survey, conducted by Douglas E. Schoen LLC on behalf of Independent Women's Voice in late August, raises the possibility of a fundamental realignment of independent voters and the dominance of a more conservative electorate.
Today, independents say they lean more toward the Republican Party than the Democratic Party, 50% to 25%, and that the Republican Party is closer to their views by 52% to 30%. This movement comes in spite of independents' generally negative views of the GOPa majority of independents (54%) view the Republicans unfavorably, compared to 39% who have a favorable impression. (The poll also revealed that 48% of independents were either "sympathetic to or supporters of the tea party.")
Yet Republicans still have a 14-point lead overall among independents who say they intend to vote in the upcoming congressional elections (37% to 23%). Forty percent remain undecided.
Independents who say they are certain to vote in the upcoming election break better than two-to-one for the Republicans, 42% to 20%. (The poll consisted of 1,000 respondents who said they were absolutely certain or very likely to vote.). These figures suggest that if the Republican message is compelling enough, the 14-point margin can grow based on turnout. But to achieve that, Republicans need a positive message.

If those numbers are true, turn out the lights.
This result is contrary to the “common wisdom” of the “mainstream” folks.
In generally “accepted” theory, the Republicans need to cater to the moderates in order to attract the independents.
This year the moderates are getting wiped out in the primaries, yet the Republicans are suprisingly gaining.
Exactly. If these numbers are even close there isn’t even an election contest this year....Then again, when you look at individual races...these numbers would seem not to be so accurate.....This election (as are all off election years) will be about turnout, turnout, turnout....
Well, that’s it, then.
Folks aren’t about to return the liars to congress.
Not in this election.
75% of Americans know the country is moving in the wrong direction.
Party has nothing to do with it.
Liberalism is the enemy, and now they know it.
Republicans need a positive message.
Contract with America 2, here we come!
With any luck they might even be good enough to nullify inevitable Demonrat vote fraud.
This is great news. we need a win this fall.
The Republicans did NOT win the independents.
The democrats earned the hatred of the independents by their systematic arrogant destruction of our freedoms and our economy.
Now there is a HUGE difference and people are paying attention.
No kidding.
Throw another log on the fire of the Democrats' demise, if this is true. Even if it's only close to being accurate, coupled with all of the other polls we've seen, and the way so many races across the country are shaping up, and it's looking like Armageddon for the Dems.
Rasmussen has been showing similar results with unaffiliated voters in the Generic poll for several months.
It must suck to wake up every day as an intellectual giant as an independent.
People keep confusing the establishment/tea party fight with being moderate vs. conservative. Many of the tea partyers have been classic, apolitical independents previously, however, who have simply had enough of the Obama gargantuan-government agenda. So it is both independents and conservatives against the ‘moderate’ (read: slow Democrat) Republican establishment.
The Ruling Class and MSM are in denial. Their plan to destroy the USA may be stopped by patriots after all.
Nevertheless, 42% of respondents say the Democratic leadership has increased spending and taxation too much, and 34% say they should be cutting spending and taxation more. One-quarter of independents who were originally Democrats say they left the party because the Democrats want government to spend and tax too much.
The large number of undecided independents does not mean they are not interested in government and politics; rather, they are angry and concerned and want to make the right choice. Seventy percent say that people like themselves are now paying more, not less, attention to politics. According to a May 2009 Pew survey, independents have grown in recent years to 36% of the electorate as of 2009 from 30% in 2002.
IIRC, a Washington Post blog recently stated that independents number thirty percent nationally. In some states, they are bigger than either major party. It's too bad the GOP blew their history of fiscal rectitude under GWB, but it looks like we have some fertile fields to plow.
If Republicans win the house and perhaps the senate, they better deliver.
No more Democrats lite.
This is the parties last chance to be the party of limited government.
Turns out Bill Clinton was wrong when he told Dems voting
for Ocare was the key to winning a permanent Dem majority.
