The mayor, the ex-city manager and six current and former officials of Bell were headed from jail to court Wednesday as residents of the modest, working-class suburb celebrated their arrest on charges of bilking taxpayers out of $5.5 million.
As former City Manager Robert Rizzo, Mayor Oscar Hernandez and the others were rounded up during Tuesday morning raids on their homes, residents across the city honked their car horns, burst into cheers and staged impromptu celebrations.
The eight were scheduled to be arraigned in court Wednesday on charges of misappropriating more than $5.5 million in public funds.
"They used the tax dollars collected from the hardworking citizens of Bell as their own piggy bank, which they then looted at will," District Attorney Steve Cooley told a news conference in Los Angeles soon after all eight were taken from their homes in handcuffs.
At City Hall in Bell, where one in six residents lives in poverty, people gathered to laugh and applaud as someone played the Queen song "Another One Bites the Dust."
"I got so excited that, oh my God, I couldn't breathe," said Violeta Alvarez, who has lived in Bell for 31 years. "I'm excited. I'm happy. I have tears of joy in my eyes."

String ‘em up, and let the citizens play human piñata with them.
Democrats are they? My my my, what a suprise.
Well of course not ... you forgot the rule ... silly
As beautiful as the weather and scenery in California are, you couldn’t pay me to live there with all the liberals, illegals and high taxes.
This needs to happen in DC. They do the same thing only on a larger scale.
The folks in Bell, Ca have shown what can happen when we all stand together against corruption in govt.
Those congress-critters had better pay attention!
In California, all local (city and county) elected positions are officially non-partisan. So while these individuals may happen to be registered as Democrats, they were not elected or hired as Democrats. It would therefore be inappropriate for the article to mention their party affiliations, even if known.
There is lots of “name that party” bias in the media that you can complain about, but this isn’t one of those instances.
There are plenty of local Republicans that are just as corrupt. Don’t fool yourself.
Beats bugs, humidity and more bugs.
No, it shows that people need to get off their butts and pay attention.
It takes a lot of work to hunt down what is going on at city hall. Even more work to stop it. It is like a cat and mouse game. They try to hide it. You find it. They spin it. You point out the spin.
In the end you get a bunch of cheerleaders attacking you and saying how great their local elected officials are. Even if you uncover it, it goes to a grand jury and the grand jury agrees with you, their lemming supporters still attack you.
I bet some of you reading this are in a local political clique and would never question the people on the city council you support, have probably yourselves attacked someone digging into city hall because they were going after someone you support.
Beats bugs, humidity and more bugs.
No it doesn't ... However, in Houston you can have all of the above ...
Being from California I was temporarily fooled by the little glowing lights flying all around the yard in random patterns. Until I learned they were glow bugs I thought for a moment I had been magically transported back to the West Coast.
Freezer sales are up.

I’ll take the bugs and humidity, you can keep the liberals and illegals.
I understand the infestation of liberal and illegals is spreading your way, although an exterminator seems to be at work on reducing the number of liberals across the country.
With a bit of luck the exterminator working on the RINO problem will have some success with the illegals too.
As long as the bugs and humidity don't start coming this way I can live with that - and the sunshine.
