Southern Shame, Southern Ghosts (CONFEDERATE FLAG BAN)
World Net Daily ^ | September 30, 2010 | Franklin Raff

Posted on 09/30/2010 3:55:02 AM PDT by golux

The University of Mississippi has terminated its mascot, "Colonel Reb." The mascot, an archetypal Southern gentleman with a hat, cane, and a little bow-tie, is of course racist.

Affable, bearded and jaunty, with a bright costume that cleverly foiled his dark history on the plantation, Col. Reb, when he was alive, looked rather like that other infamous slave-driver, Col. Sanders, whose inscrutable and permanent smile these days (in markets where he still shows his face) offers only a faint clue as to the fortunes he's made in his long, post-war masquerade as a peddler of fried chicken.

"We just want it to be over," said one Mississippi student on the subject of Col. Reb's execution.

Watch your back, Sanders.

There is of course nothing sacred about a football mascot or a corporate brand, and nothing particularly sad about the disappearance of either one, except for the fact that now there is nothing left of Southern symbolism to erase.

(SNIP)

And now we learn that what legions of Americans consider to be a transcendent symbol of extraordinary military leadership and valor, states' rights, indefatigable heroism, enduring pride and strength in the face of terrible odds and calamitous defeat – the Confederate battle flag – is now officially deemed a symbol of hate by the U.S. armed forces. Prospective members of all branches of the armed forces who happen to have a "Confederate flag" tattoo are automatically rejected.

(SNIP)

When they once again encounter their ancestors, which I believe they will, how will so many Americans account for their feeble treachery?

Maybe, like the Mississippi student, they will say: "We just wanted it to be over."

I wonder what some of those old heroes might say in reply....

“If everyone had felt that it was a bad idea to send people into an inhospitable land...”

Except things grew here ... and it was habitable ... BIG difference. How you could equate that shithole and North America really shows you are desperate.

“What do you think Douglass meant a few lines later when he said this?”

He meant “oh good, a sucker I can roll.” And he did. Do you think he was unaware of the the guy’s history and speeches?

Nice cut-and-paste. Next time take out the footnote numbers and people might think you wrote it.”

If I had wanted people to think I had, I would have taken out the footnotes. This isn’t a thesis, is it genius? The content is there; dispute it. And stay up all night rewriting something, it’ll give you something to do.

pardon me but you lost me..and i sure never found the Radical Republicans of Reconstruction to be terribly conservative, particularly not culturally.

But to be fair...unlike Glenn Beck and many NeoYankees here I don't find political history follows a straight path with easy to define sides

as in I actually am both a Jeffersonian Democrat and a Hamiltonian Federalist depending on subject and while on Beck...I don't find Teddy Roosevelt a bad guy but like Beck I ain't crazy about Princeton head Woodrow Wilson either.

I think fire breathers on the southern side and radicals to the left of Lincoln should have not let such a bloodletting of good American stock take place but neither side deserves what we have become now.

Much like the WWII vets as well, they don't deserve us as descendants...we are so weak as a culture...ready to not stand up for jack if it involves any minority of any sort...religion, race, ethnicity, sexual preference and so forth...just give us a sword we'll fall on it...like over Colonel Reb or Mosques as Ground Zero or manmade disasters or banning Christmas in school...all the same crap.

I oppose it all.

I have taken the time to ping list all the positive posters to this entertaining thread.

I want to thank all of you...job well done. I realize the BATS (Bigots Against The South) are on full parade but take heart, there are only about 8 of them on this thread droning on as usual.

We all know they are one issue Johnnies and we know why. I don't understand why they are tolerated here like Whiskey Papa and #3fan and WhoisGeorgeSalt were till found out after so much work.

A true white racist would be banned immediately but those who rail on with fullbore personal rancor towards southerners and at times others they view as hicks are tolerated.

So be it...no forum is perfect and this is the the big daddy as we all know....you either post here or you lurk and anti-freep..lol

I would like to especially thank non southerners here who understand our culture war we are embroiled in and see these agitators here for what they are.

It will take all sane and right minded folks from all over America and not just whites either to turn back this garbage that has reached a head with Obama and the likes of his Department of Justice and EEOC and so forth.

Thank you all and God bless. Well done.

Some of these klowns got hit with some tough questions on this thread by some of you....Love it. I've been here 10 years and was astounded to see this tripe on a conservative forum and knew quickly it was not random...many of them are concerted. Just a quick view of their posting patterns says plenty...(how do the mods not see this?)

and btw....I just actually read the whole article...not bad...this lad is sympathetic

and guess who he is?

A Jewish kid from Virginia who I remember from Gordon Liddy’s radio show...Franklin Raff....I had no idea and he is a Tea Party speaker.

Better be careful...some of these impostors here might feed this to anti-Tea Party operatives about racism since he wrote an article sympathetic about Colonel reb and southern heritage at my alma mater.

if it gets mentioned on TV...you'll know who fed it...these so called conservatives here who live to bash Dixie under the guise of the black man's grievances

Very well said, Ma'am. Let us see if that 'Saint' can defrost Ice Pick's process of critical thinking..

In the Conkling letter before mentioned, I said: “Whenever you shall have conquered all resistance to the Union, if I shall urge you to continue fighting, it will be an apt time then to declare that you will not fight to free Negroes.” I repeat this now. If Jefferson Davis wishes, for himself, or for the benefit of his friends at the North, to know what I would do if he were to offer peace and reunion, saying nothing about slavery, let him try me (…). disHonest Abe

My Scottish ancestors demand it.

They were once slaves and indentured servants, but you don't here me whining about it.

I’ve had a post removed for saying something supposedly racist when race was the furtherest thing from my mind when I posted. It took me awhile to figure out why my post was removed. It took some doing to tie my post to racism but they did it. I noticed that southerners are the least protected class of people here. We even get insulted by our own. The thing is stereotyping southern people has become so commonplace that most people don’t even realize they’ve done it.

Except things grew here ... and it was habitable ... BIG difference.

And Africa was uninhabitable? So where did all those slaves come from in the first place?

How you could equate that shithole and North America really shows you are desperate.

And how you could declare Africa uninhabitable really shows you're a fool. What you seem to be saying is that Europeans could conquer the wilderness and carve out a future for themselves but former slaves could not. Why would that be?

Actually it means you didn't read his speech, other than that segment you copied from some Lost Cause fantasy site. And yes, Douglass was well aware of Lincoln's history and speeches - all his history and all his speeches. Unlike you.

What gets me is all these egalitarian south haters who don’t get where all of this ultimately goes. What exactly will stop the ‘social justice’ train from demanding the removal of Washington, Jefferson and many others from exulted status to ‘evil slave holder’? Columbus? the heroes of the Alamo or how about the American flag itself which is already under attack for the very same thing. The list goes on and on and these zealots are helping the Marxist. They can’t see the forest for the trees. They think they are somehow moral superior when they are joining forces with the very people that will destroy it all.

Lincoln was willing to leave the slavery issue just as it was if the south would just not secede.

Not quite. Lincoln was willing to leave slavery alone where it existed but was not willing to support its expansion into the territories. That's what killed any deal with the rebel states.

I repeat this now. If Jefferson Davis wishes, for himself, or for the benefit of his friends at the North, to know what I would do if he were to offer peace and reunion, saying nothing about slavery, let him try me.

And about 6 months later Davis did. It was called the Hampton Roads Peace Conference, and Lincoln made it clear that the South could have peace with reunification and without their slaves.

Hypocrisy thy name is cowboyway.

Yawn...

I'm not accusing you of not opposing Obama, though I strongly suspect that your opposition in that area is tepid at best because your true goal is to leave this country you all hate so much.

NS the perennial liar. Where have I ever said that I hate this country? Put up or shut up.

You know, I'm just tired of your spineless crap. I issued you a real world challenge and you backed down. You're the one that just shoots your mouth off about fighting for the country but all you ever do is post bilge about us conservatives that are out there in the real world actually trying to make a difference.

I've proven that you're just a Gutless Wonder, a spineless, gelatinous waste of human chromosomes.

If you change your mind and decide to accept my challenge I'll respond to you. Other than that, I'm not going to waste any more time with a trifling little coward like you.

Thank you for drawing my attention back to this thread. I haven’t had a chance to read much of it, but now I’ll make it a point to.

I don’t understand the bigotry directed against the South. I’ve lived a few places around this great land, and all the best places have been in Dixie. I’m moving back to Dixie right this minute. Everyone I’ve told up north has had positive things to say. Some of them have expressed a bit of envy at not being able to come along. The race baiters on this thread might be surprised at who have expressed the strongest desire to move to the South.

When I moved to the northern town I’m now moving away from, I was surprised at the level of racial segregation and disharmony. There’s a “colored church” in the poor part of town. Everyone calls it the colored church, including the people who go there. There are areas that a white woman dare not go. I accidentally wandered into one of those areas, once. Only once. Every place I’ve lived in the South has been fully integrated. Every place I’ve lived outside of Dixie has been effectively segregated to one degree or another. I spent my early childhood in the north and midwest. I was nine before I ever met a black person. How many Southerners can say that? Or would even want to?

It seems to me, the BATS (I like that term) are stuck in the past. And it’s a past that never even existed in the real world.

I wasn’t born in Dixie, and I haven’t had the pleasure of living in Dixie for the past several years, but Dixie is my home. I have my bags packed ~ correction, I threw everything in the car so fast I didn’t get it packed in the luggage. I have my car packed so full I can’t see in the rear view mirror, but that’s fine, that’s not the direction I’m looking.

Thank you for including me in your list of "positive posters" on this thread. Although I still have some doubts about some of these matters, I have become pretty positive about much of it.

One of my lingering doubts concerns the calls I hear here for "modern secession" by the South. Are these expressions for Southern independence genuine or just a lot of blarney?

How can I learn more about all this?
