The University of Mississippi has terminated its mascot, "Colonel Reb." The mascot, an archetypal Southern gentleman with a hat, cane, and a little bow-tie, is of course racist.
Affable, bearded and jaunty, with a bright costume that cleverly foiled his dark history on the plantation, Col. Reb, when he was alive, looked rather like that other infamous slave-driver, Col. Sanders, whose inscrutable and permanent smile these days (in markets where he still shows his face) offers only a faint clue as to the fortunes he's made in his long, post-war masquerade as a peddler of fried chicken.
"We just want it to be over," said one Mississippi student on the subject of Col. Reb's execution.
Watch your back, Sanders.
There is of course nothing sacred about a football mascot or a corporate brand, and nothing particularly sad about the disappearance of either one, except for the fact that now there is nothing left of Southern symbolism to erase.

And now we learn that what legions of Americans consider to be a transcendent symbol of extraordinary military leadership and valor, states' rights, indefatigable heroism, enduring pride and strength in the face of terrible odds and calamitous defeat – the Confederate battle flag – is now officially deemed a symbol of hate by the U.S. armed forces. Prospective members of all branches of the armed forces who happen to have a "Confederate flag" tattoo are automatically rejected.

When they once again encounter their ancestors, which I believe they will, how will so many Americans account for their feeble treachery?
Maybe, like the Mississippi student, they will say: "We just wanted it to be over."
I wonder what some of those old heroes might say in reply....

Every generation of children needs heroes. Over time, some might lose their value and become a destructive drag on progress. When it's time to go, it's time to go.
I will teach my grandchildren about Trent Lott and Thad Cochran, real rebels who bucked the trend to bring their state and the South to the Republican Party. It's a beautiful story.

Renounce rebellion and treason committed to further and protect the shameful institution of slavery. Reject southern generals who raped slaves, sold their own mixed race children into slavery as brothel slaves, and committed war crimes like Lee. Celebrate the new freedom of all southern people to make their own way in the world. Reject attempts to prop up the feeble pride of the worst white thugs at the expense of honest black men and women.
Do that and I will be more than satisfied.
Southern rebellion, treason, the institution of slavery, klan thuggery, and lynching are a disgrace.
You can go straight to h*ll and I will be happy. Just stay up in your northern Detroit liberal h*ll holes and leave us alone and we will all be happy.

One of my ancestors was a slave runner. He transported Piquat Indians from Massachusetts to the East Indies, and returned to Massachusetts with Africans. Look up Massachusetts on a map. I think you’ll be surprised.

War crimes? Are you Freaking serious? Look to Sherman for war crimes, Lee was an honorable gentleman soldier, Sherman was not.
You do know Sherman killed Indians later in his career right?
Just so you know that he helped wipe out the freedom of Native Americans... And the War was for more than slavery, Lincoln was far more concerned about States rights than that, you lost any chance to resist the Federal govt after that.

I am reading a history book on the Civil War and the author was no fan of the Confederacy. The so called “free states” in the north freed their slaves in 1862 at the urging of Lincoln trying to bring the war to a close. Lincoln wanted to arm them and send them to fight the war but the so called nonracist Yankees didn’t think they were smart enough to be soldiers. They wanted them to do back up work like digging trenches, etc. Lincoln agreed.
I doubt you will find anyone on here defending lynching or black slavery. By the way, do you want to defend the black crime rate? Blacks killing blacks? You sound very racist.
