Meg Whitman's campaign for governor was thrown into turmoil Thursday as the Republican sought to fend off new evidence that she knowingly had an illegal immigrant housekeeper on her payroll for nearly a decade.
Whitman denounced the allegations as a "baseless smear attack" by Democratic challenger Jerry Brown in what has become a dead-heat race five weeks before the election.
The central issue is whether Whitman knew about a letter that the Social Security Administration sent her in 2003 that raised discrepancies about the housekeeper's documents — a possible tip-off that she could be illegal.
The letter is the foundation for claims by former maid Nicky Diaz Santillan that Whitman and her husband knew for years she was in the U.S. illegally, but kept her on the job regardless.
For two days, Whitman forcefully denied receiving any such letter and said she fired the $23-an-hour housekeeper last year immediately after learning she was illegal. But Whitman's husband changed course Thursday after a letter surfaced with what appeared to be his handwriting, forcing him to say he may have been aware of the correspondence back in 2003.

That sure seems to be the reaction at my workplace this morning. People were infuriated over the obvious dirty tricks. Voicing their anger over immigration and support for Whitman.

Stop and think about why that illegal she's hauling around with her is crying all the time ~ don't you imagine Gloria has a zap collar on her, or maybe she sticks needles in her for misbehavior? We all need to know. Someone should ask her.

I always get the opposite take. The liberals stick to the dogma that they should prosecute those who employ illegals, but allow the illegals to be here. Their take is that it is the fault of those who hire them, that is why they come.
Here in Illinois, for example, I can be prosecuted for hiring an illegal, BUT, I have to accept any social security card as a legal and binding identification when hiring.
This makes no sense to me. I have had folks apply for jobs with whacked out names like Mike O’Donnel, with a drivers license to boot, and the prospective candidate is as mexican as the day is long, with little or no english speaking ability.
Now, to question those 2 forms of identification, is illegal here, and that candidate can go and file a complaint against me for discrimination and probably win.
So, in that case, I have been advised, to do a background check. Ask for date of graduation, where he graduated, what did he take in high school or college, and spend the cash to have him checked out. If it doesn’t match, THEN I can reject him based on falsifying his application under those grounds.
Its a game. Its a fricking game, and the illegals are given the playbook, while as a business owner, you have to hire an attorney to give you the play book.
My business is not located in Chicago, thankfully we are in the suburbs, but Chicago being a sanctuary city, illegals will try and get hired if your company is big enough, if you refuse to hire them, you can get blacklisted from certain job sites. But then again, if you DO hire them, you can be prosecuted for hiring them. The litmus test seems to be how much you contribute to certain groups, such as Operation PUSH, Daleys Clean Chicago and every other whacked out dem organization. Folks who do business in the city say its just the cost of doing business, and they factor that in when bidding on jobs. I will have no part of it, and refuse to work in the city proper.

The story as I have heard is that the maid is the one identifying the handwriting on the letter as Megs husband. It could still be true but it should be noticed.
Why is there no record of follow up letters that I have heard of if the problem wasn’t resolved? You would think the IRS would send a second letter if the first wasn’t responded to.
It odd that the maid would keep the letter 7 years.

the illegal needs to be deported. i expect her to ask for “whistle blower” status. unbelievable. feds knew it, and they don’t care, yet they won’t reimburse the states for all the associated costs of illegal immigration.

And even if Whitman was sent a no-match letter, and her illegal-alien maid actually gave it to her, here’s a paragraph from the letter (emphasis added):
“You should not use this letter to take any adverse action against an employee just because his or her Social Security number appears on the list, such as laying off, suspending, firing , or discriminating against the individual. Doing so could, in fact, violate state or federal law and subject you to legal consequences.”
You can see why most employers just throw these letters in the trash. Michael Chertoff, when he was Bush’s last secretary of homeland security, actually tried to fix this, by appending a letter from DHS to the no-match letter telling employers what steps they needed to take to protect themselves from “legal consequences” including, after exhausting all other possibilities (like a paperwork mix-up), firing the illegal-alien employee. The AFL-CIO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and ACLU (which are really just three sides of the same coin when it comes to immigration) sued to stop Chertoff’s new rules, and the Obama administration dropped the matter entirely.
