Autos would get up to 62 mpg under US plan

WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Automaker fleets would have to achieve substantially higher fuel efficiency -- between 47 and 62 miles per gallon -- by 2025 under a preliminary plan to further slash U.S. gasoline use that was released by the Obama administration on Friday.

Gasoline and electric hybrid vehicles and electric cars would play a crucial role in meeting the higher-range targets, according to the analysis crafted by federal environmental and transportation regulators.

"We must, and we will, keep the momentum going to make sure that all motor vehicles sold in America are realizing the best fuel economy and greenhouse gas reductions possible," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.

The auto industry is wary of any mandates that would increase costs or adversely affect production schedules for passenger cars and light trucks, which include sport utilities, vans and pickups.

Crappy little cars are another good reason to ride the train instead.

An interesting question is: when will the government start imposing fuel economy regulations on trains? Or airplanes?

That's not important-don't you know the whole Earth will die if we don't reduce our CO2 emissions?

I have been thinking about drafting a constitution for my household and then passing laws such as. My wife’s breast size must grow in direct proportion to my gut size. Sounds reasonable.

An early VW wagon could get 65 MPG so big deal. The Mobile economy run had cars get regularly over 1000 MPG. I get less than 14 MPG in my 2007 Serra and I am not complaining. My complaints are that the Government takes money on a gas tax to “fix the roads” and use it for anything else. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We are exiting the corrupt state and entering the absolute phase.

Politicians love laws like this, so they can start selling extensions, exemptions, etc. The more onerous the law, the more corruptible and profitable it becomes.

You’ll soon be getting a letter from your state like I got from some smarmy agency in Sacramento. It said (paraphrasing) my 1996 Explorer is a dire threat to our clean air, the global climate, and safety and we should think about getting a new vehicle. I kid you not. They won’t be far from banning or seriously taxing old vehicles over a certain weight limit or under a certain mpg limit.

Turbo common rail injection diesel. A VW Jetta diesel already gets about 30/40 mpg, and many hybrids don’t do much better than that.

Sure, I’ll take a train downtown, then to the grocery store then to my farm which is 125 miles from any town. Better yet I’ll just stop trying. This edict is sheer fantasy. 47-62 mpg driving what? A foot powered flywheel 2 cylinder cyclemobile? Oh, that’s right, the VOLT!! And, uh trains cannot compete with that kind of mileage if it was even achievable. You might want to rethink your train argument. Cause trains need cars to be inefficient to make the claim.
Relates well to previous threads. There will be ground travelers and air travelers. I’ll be the latter.
