Apple Inc. plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year, said people briefed by Apple.
The new iPhone would be similar in design to the iPhone 4 currently sold by AT&T Inc. but would be based on an alternative wireless technology called CDMA used by Verizon, these people said. The phone, for which Qualcomm Inc. is providing a key chip, is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year, according to the same people.

Ping!
Apple ping
Btt
Works for me. All the folks migrating off of AT&T to Verizon will just free up that much more bandwidth for those who remain. ;)
This keeps being floated, but the Verizon phone never seems to show up. I’d still give this no more than a 20% chance of happening.
...but it has kept me from upgrading my 3G, just in case.
“Buhbye AT&T. The iPhone was the only thing keeping your sucky service afloat.”
That, and the fact it actually works overseas. Sadly, the Verizon version is only good here in the good ol’ USA.
Apple feeling the heat from Android.
Thus AT&T was the sole provider for them.
Wonder who blinked?
Mrs. TSgt and I are Blackberry users but will soon be going Droid...
I’m no fan of Apple...
This turd rumor has bess tossed in the punchbowl so many times lately.... I’ll believe it when I have a VZW iPhone on order/in my hand and not a minute sooner. :)
Apple would have been better off if they would have done this before the Droid came out. I have the Droid 2 and my friend has the iphone. I checked out his iphone, which was a very cool phone, but my Droid can do everything the iphone can, and it seems to be built better as well.
“...soon be going Droid...”
Prepare to have a Google email account or be unable to download even the free apps.
Really.
The Verizon certification labs tend to be real hard asses when it comes to passing testing. Apple may have been trying to use corporate influence to bypass the stringent certification requirements. I suspect it is Apple who blinked. They want access to that Verizon customer base. They will have to play by the rules and pass the certification tests. Their crappy antenna issues may have been exposed and fixed in that process instead of turning into the media circus that it was.
Droid X FTW!
I hope it ends up with Sprint instead of, or in addition to, Verizon.. Cheaper plans, and solid coverage in my area..
Very good, thats correct. Its seems those in charge at Verizon are garden variety stupid. I think their comments on the iphone originally were along the lines of ‘Who would want that?’. LOL, turns out the answer is ‘lots of folks who have $$ to spend’.
Yawn, wake me up when it’s actually there, and when I’m up for a new Verizon phone next year.
Rush ended his show with this story...
Geez, I just picked up my Droid-X this morning.
