SALT LAKE CITY The LDS Church re-emphasized Thursday night that its doctrine on marriage and family is based on respect and love, as 2,000-3,000 people protested for gay rights and recognition in downtown Salt Lake City.
"Of course, the church recognizes the right of groups to voice their opinion in the public square. However, those familiar with the church's doctrine on the importance of marriage and family know it is based on principles of respect and love for all of God's children," the church's statement said. "We have continually emphasized that there is no room in this discussion for hatred or mistreatment of anyone."
The catalyst for the protest was the gay and lesbian community's reaction to Sunday's general conference address by President Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Saints.

Hmmmm... seems like a bit of an overreaction. What a bunch of drama queens!
Not sure the Mormon church - or any church - has the jurisdiction to grant rights to anyone.
Were they looking for Last Rites?
Might want to visit a Catholic church for that.
I’m thinking a good going over with disinfectant should solve the problem quickly.
“The love that dare not speak its name.” Has not stopped talking since Stonewall riots - the great gay awakening’
(Rioting outside a bar at 2 a.m. in the morning.)
If they’re going to take on anyone, I’d rather see 2 - 3,000 gays take on Phelps.
California Proposition 8
they’re Mormonphobes.

Yeah that mormon doctrines and covenants 132...
Lots of Big Love there...
I just wouldnt accuse it of being respectful...
DON'T GIVE THEM ANY MORE IDEAS!
Oops. Sorry.
Why Mormons?
______________________________________
Because while the Christians have spoken out against homosexuality, there are no hypocritical doctrines in Christianity supporting deviant sexual lifestyles for religious progression...
Mormons have had almost from the first a doctrine of adultery/polygamy D&C 132, that Joseph Smith invented early in his religion that is still a tenet of mormonism to this day.
For 47 years until the US government forced them to change their rules in 1890, the mormons practiced polygamy in order to become gods and to get into their mormon after life...
For years after Woodfuffs 1890 proclamation he and other mormon presidents still had several “wives”
The mormons believe that when their mormon jesus returns he will iniate ploygamy full time again...
maeanwhile the Fundamentalist Mormons still practice polygamy but they leave others to live their own lives.
It wasnt the Fundamentalist Mormons who are attacking the homosexuals ...it is the off shoot branch in SLC who followed Brigham Young to Utah...
After all those years of Brigham Young and his denouncation of monogamy as “prostitution” and the later mormon presidents saying much the same thing, the mormons are now in a situation where they are hypocrites for attacking the homosexuals, so the homosexuals are not letting them forget it...
Instead of spending them time and millions of dollars in 2008 on Prop 8, the mormons should have helped get McCain/Palin elected...
The Catholics and the Baptists had been working for years on their baby, Prop 8, before the mormons showed up, but nobody protested that much against them...
Why ???
Because their actions are not perceived by the homsexuals to be as hypocritical...
Although the Catholics and the Baptists have had their share of problems, it was for cause and not attitude...
This is a case of having clean hands...
The love that will not STFU.
It is because the Mormons just had their bi-annual conference the previous weekend. Besides telling their membership that they should not allow their kids to have sleepovers and they should “Praise the Man”—Holy Joe (Joseph Smith). Apostle and gay-hater, Boyd K. (KKK) Packer railed on the membership that homosexuality is a choice and all gay people are sinners and the scorn of the earth.
Jesus hung out with the “scum of the earth”—harlots, lepers, publicans, etc, but Mormom god has told its membership that they should turn their backs on their children, parents, neighbors, friends, fellow beings for being gay.
Really not a political issue (in my opinion), but the Mormons like to dig their heels in on this issue.
come on....the Catholic church has taken the brunt of gay hysteria...
And for that reason too...
However its hard to find a transcript of what Packer actually said...
Do we wonder why ???
About a year ago, First Baptist of Dallas, a downtown mega-church, presented the message 'Gay is Not OK' in a Sunday sermon. The Church was protested, but being Texas, I don't think it amounted to much.
