Alaska Sen. Murkowski embraces new outsider status with write-in campaign
Washington Post ^ | October 11, 2010 | Amy Gardner

IN ANCHORAGE "Fill in the bubble! Write in the name! Fill in the bubble! Write in the name! Fill in the bubble! Write in the name!"

So the chant went at a rally for Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski outside the public library here on a brisk recent Sunday - the soundtrack to one of the more striking and peculiar dramas of this year's fluky election season: the write-in campaign of a sitting U.S. senator.

After her loss in an August primary to tea-party-backed lawyer Joe Miller, Murkowski's senate career was assumed to be over. Another head-in-the-sand incumbent who just didn't get it.

But then, against all advice, including from fellow Republicans, Murkowski decided that she did get it - and was willing to fight for it.

Now, despite the hurdles in the way of a write-in victory, Murkowski is stirring passion and energy. It helps that the "entrenched incumbent" is suddenly the underdog, turning the year's throw-the-bums-out theme on its head. If she succeeds, Murkowski will join Miller, of all people, as one of the year's unlikeliest winners.

"It's kind of fun," Murkowski said during a recent campaign trip down Alaska's majestic Kenai Peninsula, where she went from a senior center to a cocktail reception to a firefighters convention with the urgency of a long shot. "It's fun to be turning the tables on your primary opponent, who was making such a big deal about how he is running against the establishment, and now he has been embraced by the establishment. I've been kind of booted off, and we're now the insurgency."

Gimme a #@?! break. Murkowski, you’re not part of the establishment?? Lady, just because you say it’s so, doesn’t make it so. You are the establishment. You are a big-government, big-spending, anti-freedom liberal.

I swear, some days, I hate the RINO’s more than I hate the Democrats.

This one is a real danger!

Remember that we have potentially the most fearful lame-duck session in the countries history, and that the future of the next few years hangs on a single thread (or two, depending on the results Nov. 2) of a Senate that has just enough GOP members to stop so much most radical legislation from being passed.

There are already enough shaky republicans, but the addition of a vindictive, revenge-on-my-party individual is extremely dangerous.

Been watching Lisa with disgust since when I first arrived here in Alaska from Pa. She ran for state house and all she ever talked about was social issues.

Miller has this in the bag unless every last dem up here votes for Murkowski over their own no name dem candidate; don't figure that is in the cards.

Even the few repubs I do know who voted for Lisa in the primary will not speak her name now; hate her bad.

The Native Corps leadership will support her over the money & lack of accountability they have, but the regular Indian in the Village won't. Our community on the Yukon is a split community, White town and Indian Village 4 miles upriver; people like being with their own kind you know. Many of the older Indians were drafted and did their Vietnam tour; mostly don't like the feds either. Several of them changed from dem to repub in order to vote for Miller in the primary. I helped them send in their absentee ballots, no joke. They fully realize the country is going broke too. Also realize most of the fed money never makes it to the village. Most of it ends up in corrupt White & Indian corporate employees & lawyers. Miller brought this up last week and my Indian buddies heard him say it and agree.

Miller will take this race no matter what the polls say.

She had a million to send out one message...write in “Lisa”.
Apparently, they don’t even have to write in her last name.
Her ads are everywhere, it’s disgusting.
