(CNN) Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is defending Sarah Palin against recent attacks Monday, telling CNN that GOP detractors of the former vice presidential nominee need to "shut up." "These Republican leaders who don't put their names in print but make comments in shadows need to shut up," Steele told American Morning's John Roberts Monday. "We're focused on winning elections tomorrow night. We're not focused on 2012."
Steele's comments were in reference to a Politico article out Monday in which a string of unnamed Republicans, feeling Palin could not be a viable presidential contender, said it will be the party's goal to prevent her from running in 2012. Other establishment Republicans have also gone on the record to criticize the former Alaska governor most recently Karl Rove, who last week said Palin lacks the gravitas to sit in the oval office. But speaking on CNN Monday, Steele said he would be happy if she is the party's standard-bearer in 2012 "If she goes through the process and the Republican primary voters vote for her, absolutely I would be happy," said Steele. "Why wouldn't I be?

Michael Steele ... attempting to make himself relevant (by supporting Sarah).
Well, good for Steele.
The first of them would probably be Tokyo Rove.
Why are we even bothering to respond to mythical ‘media sources’ ?
This is a 100% made up story
O'Donnell went through the process. The Republican primary voters gave her the nomination -- and the Party Elite did everything they could to destroy her campaign.
Steele is part of the problem. The tsunami has got to sweep away more than just Democrats.
Compared to, say, that Democratic legend Ted Kennedy, she’s much more intelligent and has a much more stable family life. Try telling that to a lib, and watch them froth at the mouth!
The medium is the message.
There was a clip on CNN and he said it. It’s either 1) Steele saw the effectiveness of the Tea Party and palin’s effectiveness AND saw the writing on the wall that elitists like him are done for OR 2) he’s covering his bases in case Palin does win the nomination.
This fool is craftier than Clinton.
The point is to take over the R party, not replace every single person in it. I’m not saying Steele should stay in his post; maybe he should go. Fine.
But in this instance he said the Right Thing. Doing the Right Thing should be acknowledged as the Right Thing.
Thank you, Michael Steele, for saying what so many of your fellow elitists find it impossible to say.
Gee. That's nice. The Republican Nation Chairman will support Palin if she becomes the Republican Party's nominee in 2012.
I support Palin to be the Republican Party nominee in 2012.

At least someone in the RNC gets it. Smart move Michael. Go Rogue.
He also said shut-up to the critics. Good for him.
Are Steele and Palin enthusiasm-twins, separated at birth?
“If she goes through the process and the Republican primary voters vote for her, absolutely I would be happy,” said Steele. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“For the second time in two months ex-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has said shes willing to run for president. “If there’s nobody else to do it, then of course I would believe that we should do this.”
This is a "wedge issue" being created by the MSM. They are trying to cause dissension within the Republican party. Don't give them the satisfaction of falling for this old trick.
These guys are soooooo afraid Palin will get the nomination and then lose. This great thinking got us McKook.
Sorry to be a drag, but I think Steele said the right thing, but was dishonest when he said it. I don't think he is sincere, I don't think he is principled, and I don't plan to ever say anything nice about him.
Ok. I’m not going to make a big effort here defending Steele.
I do like that he said this, though. Whatever his motives.
I think perhaps they’re more afraid she’ll get the nomination, and WIN”
