He gained national prominence based on the 1987 Twana Brawley case, in which he acted as the advisor to the 15-year-old Brawley, who alleged she had been abducted, covered with feces and raped by six white men, some of whom were police officers and one an assistant Dutchess County New York District Attorney. Although the allegations caused a sensation, whipping up racially divisive national media attention, eventually a lack of factual evidence and discrepancies in her claims resulted in the charges being revealed as a fabrication.
