Can Jerry Brown and Andrew Cuomo govern?
WaPo PostPartisan ^ | Nov. 3, 2010 | Charles Lane

Most of America turned red last night, but I was struck by the continuing blueness of two of the nation's largest states: California and New York. Voters there chose the old-time Democratic religion, in the form of governors-elect Jerry Brown and Andrew Cuomo. Not only is Brown a former governor from the 70s, he is the son of a former Democratic governor from the 50s! Of course, Cuomo's dad was guv once upon a time, too. Admittedly, only Brown faced serious opposition. But the margin of Cuomo's victory on an night when other Dems running statewide won more narrowly was impressive.

I can't quite understand why either man would want the job he has just won. California and New York are not only among the largest states, they are arguably the two most dysfunctional, with massive fiscal problems and chronically unruly legislatures. There is a real question as to whether either one is governable at all anymore.

Ah, yes! Shelly Silver - a wholly owned subsidiary of the ambulance chasing law firm, Weitz & Luxenberg. Turn on a TV in NY and wait five minutes; you’re bound to see a commercial for these whores of the trial lawyers crime syndicate. And Shelly refuses to disclose how much he’s paid to be ‘of counsel’ to these bottom feeders.

If you want to understand politics in NY read Plunkett of Tammany Hall. It recounts the shenanigans of a NY dem politician form a hundred years ago. It’s still true today only they’re more sanctimonious about it now.

The central question is which one will be the first to go to Obama with a request for a bail-out.

So, the two most anti-business, anti-individual states in the US just voted in a leftist retread (Brown) and a son of a corrupt bastard who himself is probably one (Cuomo). (Never mind that Cuomo was HUD secretary under Clinton when the Community Reinvestment act got kick-started in the 1990s.) People wonder why do these states continually have the same problems (only the scale changes) but the same people vote these SOBs into office again and again. I moved from NY state three years ago and am glad to be out of that socialist hell-hole. It’s a beautiful state (Finger Lakes) and has the wineries and Wegmans but Wegmans has expanded out of NY state and you can drive to the wineries, pick up what you want, and leave quickly. All one has to do to get depressed is to drive along the Thruway from Buffalo to Albany or the Southern Tier expressway between Jamestown and Binghamton. The empty factories one sees is just sad.
The state WANTS people to leave; their tax and regulatory policies beg people to leave and still they don’t get it. NYS is in the pockets of the public sector unions and pretty soon all that will be left are teachers and cops. Let me know how that works out for you.

Note the problems of these true blue states and all of their own doing with Demonrat rule. California lost it with Grey Davis NY lost it with Spitzer. I think it is a huge issue that needs to be made against the Demonrats when left to rule with limited opposition they destroy cities, states and they were doing it with the federal govt. Hell holes ensue when Demonrat policies are put into effect. Use it as an issue.

“I just heard Brown on the radio, that he did not create the mess California is in......sounds like obama light”

And we know, we know, you’ve got a plan to fix it...I believe neither narrative. Brown, your party is ridiculously responsible for the pension and budget CRISIS screaming at KalifornIyea, and secondly, you have no plan to help the state out of its completely bankrupt condition.

Good luck with that - but you’re gunna need LOTS more than that...your DOA buddy.

“Carl Paladino was not the NY GOP’s choice, Rick Lazio was and he lost in the primary, so the GOP abandoned Paladino from the start.”

Aside from the obvious infighting that often happens in political parties, once the voters choices are made, the party needs to get behind the candidate selected regardless. This did NOT happen well in NY, DE and AK this cycle, not to mention the debacle with the state GOP in CO.

Also, the GOP establishment should be shivering in its boots knowing that there will be power weilded by the Tea Parties, and they had best get on board with that reality.

Nothing’s perfect in politics - but definitely room for improvement.

Paladino also was a lousy candidate because he was not a politician and could not control his mouth.
He would have been a good governor though.

The base was discouraged by him and supposedly didn’t turn out for him, which unfortunately cost some other good republican candidates to lose by small margins.

If you’re a government employee, you’d want to live in New York/California. No one else can afford to.

The purpose of the Cuomos is to make the New Yorkers, if they were literate enough to know their past governors, appreciate Al Smith and Tom Dewey. But it quickly went downhill after Dewey.

“Both states are full of illegal immigrants, social leeches and government union members..could we ever expect a different out come?”

You’re right. Too many state govt workers afraid of losing their jobs, unions with way too much power and money, and all the govt dependents worried about benefits getting cut.
I don’t see how anyone with any financial reasoning could work past all that to first, get enough votes, and second, do what’s needed.

If you want to understand politics in NY read Plunkett of Tammany Hall.
I'm a native NYer and my Irish roots were planted in 1851 (Lower East Side).
I know all about Tammany Hall, NY politics, etc .... but always looking for a good read - thanks.
