There is a singular event that shoved the Republican Senate car over the cliff.
That event was the primary victory of Christine O'Donnell. This morning she used a phrase that is right on the money. That description is "Republican Cannibalism."
I personally hold Karl Rove to blame, followed closely by Senator John Cornyn. Rove is an establishment Progressive Republican of the first order.
Following O'Donnell's message of values victory in Delaware, Rove started slinging mud in her direction because he realized she was a woman that couldn't be bought & sold on a D.C. street corner.
It was Rove who almost exclusively undermined an untested Republican. When challenged, he became entrenched, making it a media story.
Coming out of a surprise primary victory, everyone would obviously be questioning O’Donnell’s candidacy.
It's the "Man Bites Dog" story. Rove turned an opportunity to help create an up-and-coming political star into much less.
The bottom feeder Rove chose for his personal aggrandizement to put blood in the water. The sharks had a feeding frenzy.
The result was that yet another "Traditional Values Candidate" was beaten by her own political party, & the momentum of several other races was slowed.
It gave Reid & others the chance to further paint traditional values candidates as kooks. The Republican cannibalism resulted in the Senate leadership failure to get behind Republican nominees.
The cannibalism by a self-professed REPUBLICAN strategist, wrapped up is his own glory led to lost momentum by MIller, Fiorina (albeit her real defeat was the unfortunate infection), Buck, Angle & Rossi.
His poor choices contributed to a decay of no less than 15 percent-point in Delaware. Had Delaware been advocated by Rove, rather than diminished, today we would be looking at a three-seat Senate majority, & a Republican Governor in CA.

While Rove didn’t choose the Republican candidate for senate in Delaware, he did indeed choose to do all he could to ensure the Republican candidate so chosen lost against a “bearded marxist.”
Accept COD as “worthy” or not, as the chosen candidate by Delaware Republicans, she had the right to expect support from the RNC, including Rove. For him, and “establishment Republicans,” to deny her, to work against her, was grievous. Amounting to a shot across the bow aimed toward the TEA Party.
Rove is a RINO. I personally intend to do all within my power to see to the extinction of all RINOsaurs. We should never compromise with socialists and marxists. Not now, not ever. To that end, we take no prisoners.
Bottom line, whatever COD was perceived to be by some of the establishment Republicans like Rove, she was 1000% better than the “bearded marxist” who was elected.

Completely agree, but it doesn’t change the fact that a, so-called, Republican continued to attack another Republican even after the primary was over. Even if he cost her one vote, it was totally uncalled for and proves he cannot be trusted.

I disagree with the opinion of darkwolf regarding COD. But, I support his/her right to freely express their opinion on this forum. As much as I would expect him/her to defend my right to express my disagreement.
There are many temptations of incivility toward some posters that we disagree. Especially when we find their opinion obnoxious, and inflammatory, to our own view. The secret is to remain civil, in spite of the aggressions we might feel obligated to express, toward their motives, and/or ill-founded belief systems.
I’m willing to give credit where credit is due — but Rove’s words after O’Donnell won the Primary cost the Republicans that Senate seat.

My point was that he PUBLICALLY railed and smeared her. He’s entitled to think that she wasn’t the best candidate; but what he did was give the Dems more ammunition in an already heated debate.
And Rove/the GOP did virtually NOTHING to help this candidate. She won the primary; the GOP should have helped her, no matter what.
We should keep our disagreements private, is my point. He acted like a classless, arrogant, elitist jerkoff.

You are correct in your analysis. COD is not going away anytime soon and her fans within the movement will rally behind her making it a litmus test of sorts, as if it is only possible to support fiscal conservatism by supporting this women, and rabidly attack anyone who disagrees.
I think what happened needs to be viewed in the context of the current political landscape. Right now the formula is a new face (or at least new to the movement) challenges a democrat and an establishment GOP person.
Then:
(1)They get alot of hype online and via the usual sources (Rush, FOX, etc.)
(2)They come out with some hard hitting messages about Obama/Pelosi/Reid and the debt and healthcare and such.
(3)Then they are attacked somehow by the media usually on personal matters (Palin’s baby for example) but sometimes gaffes (Angle’s hispanic/asian comment).
(4)Then the conservative base rallies around them and carries them to victory to the horror of Democrats.
So in COD case people, largely from out of state who did not know her, were introduced and simply thought to apply the formula. They saw a pretty lady talking bad about the state of washington so they thought this was the next Palin/Bachmann. No one bothered to check into her background as a professional political campaigner, the lawsuits, living off campaign money, the poor financial situation, odd personal history. They didn’t think they needed to as COD was saying all the pick up lines to get the Tea Party to fall in love. When CODs gaffes came out (ignorance about the constitution and supreme court, weird personal statements) people just chalked it up to step 3 and assumed that step 4 would follow as this was supposed to be a tidal wave election.
When this failed to happen many in the movement who have internalized COD as being one of us want to defend her and will attack anyone for perceived betrayal. Look at this thread for instance. Lots of comments about “COD has conservative principles damnit! Don’t you like conservatives?” with no proof at all for any of that. Palin was mayor then governor in Alaska. She can point to things she has done when asked to prove she is a conservative. Scott Brown could point to things and say he is a conservative (which for someone in Massachusetts he is). Angle could point to things and say she is a conservative. COD? Not really. Sure she is a social conservative but I don’t really see signs for abortion and abstinence only education at the rallies. Everyone is focused on fiscal issues right now and COD’s fiscal reputation is troubling.
The problem we have now is that people have dug in and assume like with Palin that skeptics will come around and her reputation will somehow soar. The difference is Palin is a very smart politician and COD is a walking gaffe machine. The movement has already damaged itself by jumping in to bed with her without really thinking it through.
We should make it very clear that COD is not an accurate representation of our movement which is a perception that Democrats will attempt to solidify amognst moderates (aka the people you can’t win the white house without). The good news is that this should be easy to accomplish as more and more people look into her history without an impending election. Instead of COD vesus Democrat with the “us vs them”/”vote the bastards out” thought process people can look at it with a “what does she bring to the table for us” mentality. Then they will find they do not like what they see and don’t want to have this bizzare* woman as a face of the movement at all.
* = my sincerest apologies to anyone on this site who is unmarried 41 year old women, who don’t believe in masturbation, lives off campaign money and used to have picnics with witches on satanic altars.
Even if everything you say is true, it is still beside the point because of this one truth: You can ONLY vote for the actual humans who are in the race at the time.
Christine was a better choice than the RINO Castle because if Castle had won both the primary and the election he would have voted with the Dems on important legislation. So it is good that Christine had the chance to run against the dem.
If people like you and Rove and other RINO elites hadn’t run down Christine - who was on our side and was the only non-Marxist ACTUALLY IN THE RACE - and hadn’t stayed home or influenced otherwise wobbly voters to vote against her she had a good chance of winning. But the sum total of her own weaknesses (everybody has some, even the marxist, even Castle) plus the clear treachery from her own party starting on the day of her primary win doomed her.
And there is no good reason whatsoever for having trashed Christine and turned voters against her. That is treason to the party, no matter what you think of her. You can hold your nose and vote for her in exactly the same we we would have held our nose and voted Castle had he won.
There were only 2 humans in the race. You, Rove, RINOs trashed the only on on our side which resulted in alienating undecided voters and even moderate Republican voters.
The result was GIVING THE SEAT TO A MARXIST. And you are still dumping on Christine.
Maybe you ought to give it a rest and consider just exactly what it is you’ve really done.

Why? Because she said so? She’s a politician they say things all the time! Can she point to any serious work for fiscal conservatism?
Why? Because she would enable the GOP to have a stronger majority in the Senate? Only if she gets there.
Do you realize that different parts of the country work differently? Scott Brown isn’t an ideal senator for conservatives. If he was running in Texas he would get trounced. He wasn’t. He ran in a very liberal state at a time when the Democrats had a super majority in the Senate. By winning he has derailed that super majority and that is a good thing from a conservative point of view. Scott Brown supports many liberal positions. Should we hate on him? Is he a RINO? Should we primary him when he comes up for re-election?
Delaware is in a similar situation. COD and her wing of the state GOP consistently get beat by double digits. Castle had a better shot at the seat. I’m not defending Castle or his record or votes he may or may not have made if he had won. Would he have been part of a group that would do some liberal things? Probably. But I can live with that just like I can live with Scott Brown if only for the advantage the GOP would get by becoming the majority party in the chamber which would have given us power over chairmanships and the ability to set the agenda and rules of the Senate.
I’m glad we have the house and it will enable us to hold the line (ie no more huge bills like Obamacare) but to make real progress to our goals we needed the Senate in this election and now it is critical to get in 2012 (hopefully with the whitehouse as well).
It’s odd to see posters on a site who trumpet their freedom to speak, their unwillingness to be silenced, and their embracing of conservative values sending certain things to me off this thread, but I’ve given up on discussing this person—I’ve said more than enough, anyway.

I’ve been coming here ten years, and yours is one of the most thoughtful, clear-minded, accurate, well-written posts I’ve ever read on this site.
I hope you send it to a conservative magazine and get it published, because you said all that should be said. Those who are truly conservative should read it, and read it again, and THINK, not feel, about all it says and implies. Because if we focus only on how we feel about candidates, and ignore how those candidates and are party are used by the media to portray us as loons to those voters we need to attract—not by being “RINOs” or changing our ideas, but by attracting new believers to OUR ideas—we are doomed to electoral meaninglessness.

No I didn’t think it was funny. It was a cheap shot and very poor taste. People went after Palin’s son and called him a “retard baby”. That was also very poor taste. Such things are terrible and I don’t like it whenever it is done no matter who the target is (Obama with the african witch doctor photo).

That story did not cost her the race. Bristol’s shenanigans or slurs on Trig did not cost the McCain/Palin ticket the race. I’m not cheering that tactic at all but it was totally irrelevant. Now I’m assuming that it was irrelevant someone in Delaware may have read that story and said “my god she doesn’t shave! I must vote for Coons!” I have no idea how people in Delaware decide how to vote. I can just look at numbers.
The fact remains we lost that race. We lost because of a poor campaign (poorly run not poor for $) by a women with no bona fide fiscal conservative experience but plenty of bona fide personal baggage. Me? Personally I couldn’t care less what a Senator does with their love life. I care how they vote and how they enable my ideological allies to vote. COD would have been a better vote than Castle? Probably. But Castle would have been a better vote than Coons.
COD’s personal baggage (she had to spend more time talking about not being a witch than Obamacare for example) has cost us one seat already I don’t want her to cost us more. The Democrats are going to try to use her like we used Pelosi to get the vote out. This isn’t the time to play nice and coddle people because we like their campaign ads. If someone becomes a burden to our goal of staving of fiscal Armageddon they got to go.
