Mrs Obama goes vintage

Since her arrival in India on Saturday, US First Lady Michelle Obama’s 1960s look has become the talk of the town. On Sunday morning, Michelle visited a school in Mumbai with husband, President Barack Obama, wearing an outfit reminiscent of 1960s style icon, former first lady, Jackie Kennedy. On her arrival in India, she wore a grey silk tunic, which was akin to the 1960s styles of designer labels Chanel, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.

“She has been dressing right on trend with these 60s- inspired looks. Like the floral printed skirt she wore as she played hopscotch. The thin belt with it was also vintage,” says designer Jenjum Gadi.

It’s not just her clothes, even her hairdo is toeing the vintage line. “The slight bouffant type volume on top is undoubtedly a modern interpretation of the big hairdos from the 60s,” says hair stylist Rod Anker.

“Her style in India has been a mix of old world charm and comfort. It’s her own original interpretation of it,” says designer Suneet Varma. He points that while her outfits are not as sharply tailored as Jackie O’s, they are equally glamorous.

“So, if Jackie wore pencil skirts and Chanel jackets, Mrs O has gone in for easier silhouettes like skirts, and day dresses. This has also helped make the Indian public be at ease with her,” adds Varma.

And, like every other true-blue fashionista, Michelle also mixes designer pieces with affordable labels. One of her outfits on Saturday, included a moss olive lace top from pret label J Crew, which costs approximately Rs 5,000.

“The fact that she doesn’t always wear designer labels is why she has become such a style icon,” says jewellery designer Pieter Erasmus.

What stars have to say about President Barack Obama

Can’t I just invite Obama home? I’m a great chef, I’d cook some great Indian food for him Kareena Kapoor

It’s wonderful to have Obama come and speak to the youth...His Taj speech was dignified and sensitive Rahul Bose

I’d like to ask him about recession, it affects everyone — the man in New York to a dacoit in Meerut Neha Dhupia

Too be fair who here wants their high school yearbook pictures published online? At the same time did she REALLY have to go with the WWE belt?

The beige number with the ties down the back just screams uncomfortable. I can't bear any lumps down my spine and that would be one lumpy dress. From the front it doesn't look too bad on her.

The red/black ensemble fits her body type better; not really what I would think of as day wear, but it is fitted properly unlike most stuff she wears. It appears to be made from synthetics which would drive me bonkers as I would be one gigantic static electricity discharge waiting to happen; maybe they've grounded her some how.

Comparing her to Jackie O is just ludicrous.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!!!

The Green (Teal, err...???) Jimmy Choo Immaculation shoes are on the trip!!!

Anyone else think there are ‘hash’ marks on the box to represent how many times they have been worn?

I wonder what the President of India's wife is thinking?

She was thinking...."That's a man, baby!"

The GREEN shoes!! From the inauguration!! I spotted them, too!! Methinks when Moochelle wears them, she is signaling secretly to someone, somewhere. In the past, my guess has been that she’s signaling, “Bring me a triple martini, STAT!!” but your guess is as good as mine because these shoes never MATCH anything!!

Yep, first thing I noticed were the odd colored Jimmy Choo's.

I guess she couldn't get them in a universal color or we wouldn't know when she wears them!

Well, she’s lost it again. I thought that she looked outstanding in the grey & silver silk in India, but WHAT is that uglly redbrocade with flowing (baggy) black pants number all about? And the grey day dress is just ugly.

"I don’t do photoshop, but it would be great, if it wasn’t already done, to do her as a wookie. If it was done, please post it."

No need for photoshop. moochelle is doing it all on her own. Give her a few more days and the transformation will be complete.

The red/back ensemble looks better than most of what she wears. Waiting to see how long before we see the red worn as a dress.

As always, she over accessorizes. And, don’t get me started on that lace fringe hanging from the hem. She is too old and big of a woman to wear stuff like that. ;)
