Ethanol Could Go on GOP Chopping Block
Michigan Capitol Confidential ^ | 11/11/2010 | Jarrett Skorup

When the Republican majority is seated in the House of Representatives this January, many have high expectations that they will cut government spending as many of the candidates promised on the campaign trail. But the tricky question now is: Where to cut?

Some energy and environmental experts say they should begin with energy subsidies; specifically for ethanol.

Ethanol is a biofuel made mostly from corn in North America and can be used as an additive to gasoline. In many states, there is a mandated 10% blend with gasoline; the idea being to lower the amount of oil needed.

But many experts say this doesn't work.

"Contrary to popular belief, ethanol fuel does little or nothing to increase our energy security or stabilize fuel prices," wrote Kenneth Green, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. "Instead, it will increase greenhouse gas emissions, local air pollutant emissions, fresh water scarcity, water pollution (both riparian and oceanic), land and ecosystem consumption, and food prices." ...

Imagine the benefit to NYS and Pennsylvania in going after that gas in those fields near the border. In some places, you can smell it.

Throw in all those alternative energy subsidies too. Wind, tidal, solar, etc. etc. etc.

Absolutely ETOH is a scam for payback to campaign supporters dreamed up by the Democrats all dressed up in a green AstroTurf skirt. It is actually harmful as a fuel and a huge inflation pusher as food crops are converted.
For the green heads, it means the end of their Chocolate Supply as coco trees are replaced with fuel crops.
While they are at it, lets end the sin tax on ethanol as a beverage of choice. We really need to improve the mood of America if we have to put up with the clown in the White House through 2012...

When I think of the proposal to have windmills in the Great Lakes, I think: "Are these people crazy??"

We have a corridor (the thruway) to build along...use that if anything.

Not one quote from a sitting elected representative. I’d love to see this happen but I’m not holding my breath.

I’ll wait and see. Doing it would be a good sign, because it would show that they are breaking away from the establishment and Bush wing of the GOP.

Ethanol has already destroyed (as in embrittled, causing chunks to break out) the fuel lines on my weed trimmer. What’s next...?

It trashes my engines, drives up the cost of feed corn and hence a rise in food costs across the board, does zilch to help fuel economy and mileage plus it wreaks havoc with the local water tables anywhere an ethanol plant is built.
Gee, what’s not to like?

Why they can’t they figure out a way to make fuel out of Ragweed or dandelion?
