NPR said it's "imperative" that it receives federal funding in light of a recommended cuts by the leaders of President Obama's fiscal commission.
"Federal funding has been a central component of public radio stations ability to serve audiences across the country," NPR said in a statement. "Its imperative for funding to continue to ensure that this essential tool of democracy survives and thrives well into the future."
The co-chairmen of Obama's fiscal commission, Democrat Erskine Bowles and Republican Alan Simpson, proposed eliminating funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, among other ideas, in their report on how to bring down the long-term debt in the U.S. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting assists NPR and PBS stations in their operations.
"The National Commissions proposal to eliminate federal funding for public media would have a profound and detrimental impact on all Americans," NPR said in response to the proposal.

We need some sensitivity here all my FRiends. Do you actually want the folks at NPR to find real jobs?
If it's a neutral "tool of democracy," where are the conservative viewpoints?
NPR programs such as All Things Considered and Morning Edition should be required (and, I might add, able) to survive in the competitive market place.
They just don’t want to sully their impression of themselves by “grubbing” for dollars selling commercial time.
>>this essential tool of democracy
>
>Oh it’s a tool all right, but not of democracy.
You are wrong; it is a tool for Democracy.
Democracy is nothing other than mob-rule; which is why the US is [supposed to be] a Republic.
Weren’t they saying, during the Juan Williams controversy, that Federal funds made up a tiny part of their budget? Well, which is it?
Defund the bastards. Because we can’t afford it and because they are bastards.
Why dont they just conference call all eight of their listeners direct and give them the latest Democratic talking points. That would sure save a bundle.
And a federal republic at that.
These high-level goals direct the efforts of NPR management and staff.
Make NPR the most relevant, trusted and consumed news source in the U.S.
Too late for that.
Expand the reach and relevance of NPR and member stations to current and new audiences.
Keep trying, although I think your time is over.
Unlock the potential of the national and local public media system.
I don't even think THEY know what that means...
Reflect best practices, whatever the activity or field.
Only so long as those "practices" reflect the progressive agenda.
Adapt our business model to sustain the present and secure the future.
Beg for more money from taxpayers and shame others into supporting your progressive causes. Of course, if the majority of Americans wanted your garbage you wouldn't have to beg for it.
Love your snark, Maceman.
Every generation faces is own unique challenges. Can ours go forward, honestly, without some venue guaranteeing air play of ‘Songs from Lilith Fair’ daily?
Excellent book. “Against Politics” by Anthony de Jasay.
Actually, they we’re very clear that Federal support amounts to less than 3% of their budget.
Are they so poorly managed they can’t withstand a 3% budget cut?
Change they don't got, but a few Mountain Jamboree CD's, maybe.
And they want to keep it that way, so pay up or else.
lol....
Here let me fix it:
It's imperative for funding to continue to ensure that this essential tool of the Democratic Party survives and thrives well into the future"
That too- just don’t make me pay for their propaganda.
Full disclosure, my husband loves the Saturday morning program with the 2 brothers who give car advice. They would do fine on Sirius, or commercial radio- they’re funny!
If your hubby has to listen to two car repair guys every weekend perhaps he needs a newer car. lol
