NPR said it's "imperative" that it receives federal funding in light of a recommended cuts by the leaders of President Obama's fiscal commission.
"Federal funding has been a central component of public radio stations ability to serve audiences across the country," NPR said in a statement. "Its imperative for funding to continue to ensure that this essential tool of democracy survives and thrives well into the future."
The co-chairmen of Obama's fiscal commission, Democrat Erskine Bowles and Republican Alan Simpson, proposed eliminating funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, among other ideas, in their report on how to bring down the long-term debt in the U.S. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting assists NPR and PBS stations in their operations.
"The National Commissions proposal to eliminate federal funding for public media would have a profound and detrimental impact on all Americans," NPR said in response to the proposal.

Hmmm. Nervous, ay?
Sounds like we got them someguns on the run. Draw swords and charge.
Didn’t everyone say just last month that federal funding of NPR was an irrelevant 1% of its budget ? How did it become so critical so fast ?
Get George Soros to fund’em.
NPR would not exist w/o money that flows into public broadcasting from the taxpayers.
Can’t be; they’ve told us time and again that it’s negligible...
Cut it all ..
To NPR... shut up and get to work.. LIVE and DIE by RATINGS... just like every other tv/radio organization.
I believe NPR etc will not last 18 months without MY EFFING MONEY!!!
Squeal, little piggies, squeal.
Somehow I think the vast majority of Americans will find the strength to pick up the pieces of our shattered lives and muddle through if NPR disappears.
Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead! Defund NPR immediately! They are traitors.
LOL
They are afraid they might have to get real jobs.........
essential tool of democracy
______________
Huh??????
A government financed news agency is an “essential tool of democracy”?
Double-speak.
Once again, George Orwell is proven to be the most visionary writer of the 20th century.
I say it’s imperative my taxes be reduced by not funding NPR
The local People’s TV station here is using the phrase “Fiercely Independent” to describe their news.
Sounds more like they are fiercely DEpendent on government payola.
