The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits rose slightly last week, in another reminder of the continued weakness in the labor market.

Initial unemployment claims rose by 2,000 to 439,000 in the week ended Nov. 13, the Labor Department said Thursday in its weekly report. The previous week's figures were revised slightly upward to 437,000 from 435,000.

Unexpected Thursday
(Pleasant Valley Sunday - with apologies to Gerry Goffin, Carole King and the Monkees)

The White House Press Corps down the hall
Is trying hard to learn their song…
Serenade the weak kneed Gibbs, who just came out to make them yawn…

Another Unexpected Thursday!
Spilled Oil burning everywhere!
Rows of houses they’re all foreclosed
And no one seems to care…

See Mrs. O, she’s proud today because her roses are in bloom!
Mr. O he’s so serene, He’s on TV in every room!

Another Unexpected Thursday!
Here in Unemployment Land!
The Press complains about how high it is
And the people just don’t understand…

Creature comfort goals
They only numb my soul and make it hard for me to see
My thoughts all seem to stray, to places far away
I need a change of scenery

Ta Ta Ta...

Another Unexpected Thursday
Spilled Oil burning everywhere!
Another Unexpected Thursday
Here in Unemployment land

Another Unexpected Thursday...

....and miraculously, the unemployment rate is STILL only 9.4%. What a farce, I’m still looking for all those stories about how the President is unconcerned about rising homelessness that we saw during the Bush years, and as far back as Reagan.

Anyone else noticing the math game they are playing to hide the 4,000 increase?

This is not the first time they have done this.

This is why Harry wants to push through Gay’s in the Military legislation, instead of extending current tax rates, Employment and the Economy assistance.

Way to go Harry, your still leading your lemmings off the cliff.

Apparently Winston Smith is not among the unemployed. ;-)

Odd, first thing I noticed was that it didn't say “unexpected”.

What's changed?

Oh that's right, the repubs have kicked butt all over the place.

It's no longer “unexpected” to have a higher number of 1st time unemployed filing.

Now that the repubs have won, want to bet that the unemployment rate will go up over 10%?

BINGO!

And, starting in Feb., there will be numerous stories about the “Homeless”.

Next week they will quietly revise this up by 10,000. Our government cannot be trusted about anything... they lie... it is the only way for them to maintain their control.

PROPAGANDA: Jobless Claims Rise a Bit

REALITY: Initial unemployment claims rose by 2,000 to 439,000 in the week

The number of people SUBTRACTED from the total EMPLOYED == 439,000!!!! ... the "2,000" is meaningless.

We were at 15,000 feet and falling at 630 MPH last month.

We're now at 10,000 feet and falling at 632 MPH!!

So the Propaganda from the pilot and stewardesses is that we've only accelerated 2 MPH toward the ground???

Heh. That’s a good point. (Though calculus still makes my head hurt.)

Hmm, I wonder why they don’t put it like this:

“The bad news is that we’re still hemorrhaging jobs. The other bad news is that we’re hemorrhaging jobs faster than last week. The good news is that we only hemorrhaged 439,000 jobs this week, which is just ‘a bit’ more than last week.”
