WASHINGTON – Republicans in the House have blocked a bill that would have extended jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed beyond the holiday season.

The most recent extension of jobless benefits expires Dec. 1. Two million people will lose benefits averaging $310 a week nationwide by the end of the year.

It’s true, I know people who could get jobs at any time but choose to stay on the dole.

I just don't understand this economy, and I think Obama understands it even less. I have a friend who is commercial/industrial electrical contractor. He has been looking for employees for the last 8-10 months, and says he will take anyone who is breathing at this point - forget about finding anyone with good experience. His problem - few people want to be a journeyman and spend what could be years learning a trade, no one wants "low," but reasonable pay (compared to their utter lack of skills), and no one wants to show up on time to work.

Now the dems have their headline. Then again, it’s always been about politics...on both sides. So the dems may let them expired just so they can say “We told you so.”

I think you’ve bought into the government lie hoss. Everyone wants jobs, DUH! But when push comes to shove a man provides for his family.

Jack on that.

I'm buying into the governments lies?

Your more on page with NObama than I am ... after all ... according to the government: month after month of job loss, with minimum job creation = the unemployment rate staying the same and the economy is recovering ... this is right there with what you say: Plenty of jobs out there most unfilled by choice ... everything is roses.

Funny.

We interrupt your dream for this return to reality.

The economy sucks, if it did NOT, we would not have been successful in this election. End of Story.

You cannot expect society to pick up the tab for your personal failures.

What a rude and arrogant comment. Much like this sickening thread. Some day this bad karma you are spreading around will come back on you. Maybe you will get your own dose of smug condescension thrown back in your face.

Jumping on the bandwagon too huh?

Most people out of work are not out of work by choice ... some may very well be ... but others are not out by choice. To blame anyone for being out of work as being their own fault is completely stupid and ignorant.

Most people who lost their jobs because of the economic downturn were tax payers and some still are tax payers.

will continue to do so, but I can tell you from my experience in this thread, there are a lot of hollering, unaware people are here as well.

Half of everyone you meet in the world is an idiot, the same is true for an internet forum.

I thought they would approve it if unspent stimulus money was used? I don’t think it is an outright block. Which they can’t even do right now anyway since the Dems still control both the house and Senate until the end of the year.

People in 1910 were not rich, nor was this country better off. End of Story.

I contend that the economic downturn is the fault of the government. Hands down.

I can play the blame the people game. Previous generations of Americans are to blame for creating the bad government that we have now. The same people have been making bad decisions, electing bad politicians, and doing anything else in their power to create horrible situations for a long time now.

The stupid liberal mindset of today’s generations ... you got it ... the faults of Previous generations of Americans... Who you ask? Every single person of every previous generation regardless of political affiliation as ultimately they can be directly held at fault for today’s problems.

Ha - if I had my way ... no one over 40 would be allowed to make a single decision ever again. Maybe we would get somewhere then.

For what it's worth, I first saw this on PBS’s Nightly Business Report with Suzanne Pratt and Tom Hudson, and it was reported simply as the extension being denied. Only by Congress, no political party was mentioned and no blame/credit was given.

But the measure was set forth to Congress as a "Fast Track Bill which necessitates a 2/3 vote. The Pelosi Democrat led House set it up to fail. It's a Machiavellian strategy that Pelosi is so adept, so practiced.

Remember the media talk/headlines of the last three weeks...'Republicans won'...'Republicans swept the elections nationwide'...Tea Party Republicans surprise the nation!!! We must remember a vast USA populace thinks the Repubicans are NOW in control of the HOUSE (ignorant of the fact that House Republicans just assume control in Janaury 2011).

The Obama entitlement voter will naturally blame the Republicans as not for the poor people...just for the rich.

As in the past two decades...the Republicans just do not have an adequate message nor messenger.

I guess I am a lazy bum too! I have applied for about 250 positions, landed about 8 interviews and have been a finalist 3 times. My reviews were nothing short of extraordinary at my prior job, yet I cannot get a position. People who think it is easy to get a job in this environment are living in an alternate universe.....no other way of explaining it.

I talked with a recruiter today about a position I might get an interview for.....she said she has never seen it so bad.....but what does she know? All of those people are lazy bums......I read it here.

The republicans don’t mind the extension; they just want it paid for with stimulus funds... They still lack the gumption to say NO MORE.

Unemployment Insurance (UI) taxes are paid by employers, not employees, so you haven’t “contributed” to it at all

No offense, but a get a clue before posting. In 3 states (AK, NJ and PA), taxes are taken from every employees paycheck for UI.

USALiberty is a good example of the dangers of being exposed to lead paint, which often results in brain rot. Sometimes, as the harmful side effects increase, you find yourself making mindless comments on an internet forum blaming the unemployed during an economic downturn for being unemployed (because they are personal failures)

Nail on the head post. Cut off all foreign aid first....yet that would probably bring howls from the same people on this thread.

Wow! 3 out of 50? How wrong can I be? LOL BTW, I worked at the state employment service (”unemployment office”) from 1988 to 2000 helping veterans and welfare clients. I never worked in UI itself, but osmosis is what it is. Every state that I knew of, the employers paid the UI taxes, solely.

I thank god the Republican messenger is not one of the 2/3rds of the people involved in this thread.

You cannot expect society to pick up the tab for your personal failures.

There are 5+ unemployed people for every single job opening.

And BTW, get some class for Christmas.
