Sarah Palin's Mike Huckabee problem
WaPo ^ | 6:00 AM ET, 11/23/2010 | By Aaron Blake and Felicia Sonmez

1. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday that Sarah Palin might well "run away" with the Republican nomination for president.

It's funny Huckabee should say such a thing, because he's got a lot of say over whether she does just that. And it has to do with whether he even runs in the first place.

As potential 2012 candidates weigh their prospects and determine their plans for the next presidential race, one thing is clear: that Huckabee and Palin inhabit largely the same space -- i.e. they each would perform well without the other, but they might undercut each other if they are in the same race.

There is currently a four-candidate top-tier consisting of Palin, Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. And indeed, a new Quinnipiac University poll on Monday showed the four of them all huddled between 15 and 19 percent of the vote.

But while Huckabee and Gingrich have pretty broad support, the base of support for Huckabee and Palin is readily apparent, and for both of them, it starts with born-again evangelicals. The two of them combine for 46 percent of that vote, compared to just 26 percent for Gingrich and Romney. Palin and Huckabee are also the top two vote-getters among women and people without college degrees.

So why is that important? Because if any of the four frontrunners seems least likely to run for president, it would be Huckabee. And, if he doesn't take the plunge, where is his 26 percent share of evangelicals going to go? Where is his 18 percent share of women going? Who gets his 17 percent share of those without college degrees?

The obvious answer to all three of those questions is Palin.

So what exactly is Mike’s Sarah Palin problem? That he’ll relapse from his diet and try to eat Trig?

I don’t doubt you at all, which is why I consider the righteous right to be as dangerous to freedom as the loony left.

It seems there is a concerted effort to push Huckabee out of the race. But if it is true that Huckabee and Palin “occupy the same space”, maybe Palin supporters realise that slash-and-burn isn’t the best tactic against Huckabee, so they are trying the carrot-and-stick approach instead.

But the goal is the same, to tear down one way or another every other candidate, in the hopes that voters will go with the one that is left least damaged, rather than rebel against the lack of choices.

I’m wondering if a few of the announced non-candidates are actually playing the game of hiding in the corner hoping to be the “reconciliation” candidate after the frontrunners burn down the house.

People who know nothing about Christianity or Christians think Huckaphony can be used to stop Sarah and then be discarded as Mitt rides to the rescue.

“Seriously these dim bulbs (some in my own family) want a preacher.”

Ask them if Moses ought to have jettisoned all that Exodus stuff and run for Pharaoh, or Jesus just skipped that Gethsemane and Golgotha business and just gone to Rome. That usually clogs the works, sometimes to good effect if they see the absurdity of their position.

Sometimes.

Yep, Huckabee is the elitist/MSM pick for the Repub nomination this next cycle, just like the saddled us with McLame the last time around.

Yeah, he talks like a conservative but he's got a track record in Arkansas of governing as a socialist. Plus there's the pardon thing you can guarantee they'll be plastering everywhere once the MSM gets him the nomination.

I am no fan of the Huckster, but a recent poll just out had Huckster

Can't you see, they got the results they wanted. Don't watch/listen to polls. Who sells out conference, who is in demand, who has all night camps out during her book tour? Who more closely resembles conservatives principles, Who has stood up more against this administration, dead panels, etc.

That's the 'poll' we believe - what we see/know and not what they say.

There’s a bible verse about women not having authority over men and while I believe that is directed at the leadership of the church, some evangelicals believe it translates to leadership of the country as well.

There is also a chapter about Deborah, assuming they read the Old Testament at all.

Huck running to stop Palin would greatly enhance Romney's chances.

Correct. He would be the Judas goat which gives us Mitt in 2012, just as he was the Judas goat who gave us McCain in 2008.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't put it past him.

I’m missing something here. Why all the Huckabee hate? I mean, yeah, Sarah Palin is a great candidate, but why bash Huckabee because of it?

Are there political platforms that Huckabee holds that need to be shot down? Has Huckabee done something morally repugnant that he should be rejected for?

If you could not win against McCain...please do not run again! That goes double for Romney! You people had your chance and lost to McCain. The media tells us everyday who they are afraid of...Palin. If she is sooo unelectable, then the media would shut up about her. Glowing articles about Huckabee and Mitt show me who they are not afraid of.

Does the media not understand they are transparent?
