Seoul rules out redeployment of US nuclear weapons

South Korea's defence ministry Tuesday ruled out the redeployment of US nuclear weapons on its soil as a deterrent to North Korea, a day after its minister had raised the prospect.

"Redeploying US tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea would cross the line set by the policy of denuclearising the Korean peninsula," Deputy Defence Minister Chang Kwang-Il told reporters.

"We've not considered redeploying US tactical nuclear weapons and there has been no consultation with the US over the issue," he was quoted as saying by a ministry spokesman.

The Pentagon also said Monday that the United States has no immediate plans to redeploy the weapons, which were withdrawn in 1991.

Revelations over the weekend about a new uranium enrichment plant in North Korea triggered alarm in Washington, Tokyo and Seoul.

Asked in parliament Monday whether the South would consider asking for a redeployment, Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young told a lawmaker that the government "will review what you said".

Like Obama would allow nukes to be deployed regardless of South Korean wishes.

Clearly, no one has told Minister Chang about the Nork enrichment facility. I'm sure it's just for humanitarian purposes.

There is a big boat called the George Washington, and its group, entering the neighborhood at this moment. The reality of a carrier group in your neighborhood kind of makes this opposition to deployment of nuclears a wasted concern.

No!

Once apprised of the danger, President Obama ordered a crash program to retrofit the island with outriggers. That work was completed in October.

How about this: you deploy them and just shut up about it. Keep em guessing. That’s what they do to us. This is not as complicated as they make it.

Same with security at airports. Quit telling them what we will or will not do.

I’d love to hear those e-trade babies talk about this stuff.

Born in 1952 in the midst of the height of this endless non-war, I’m still clueless WHAT, exactly, we are stll doing over there 60 years later.

Can anyone with anything other than the usual knee-jerk real-politic take on this explain why Washington’s warning about entangling alliances continues to be ignored? I know greater minds than mine are at work here - please enlighten me.

The Korean War turned into a meatgrinder Quick,,,

Fact : North Korea wants the south,,,

They would stop at nothing to get it,,,

After China entered the war they had to get out while

saving face as it cost so much,,,

I think that if we left North Korea would get stooopid

and try it again like 1950,,,

The US is the only ones that could stop that...

That greatly increases their chances of being the recipients of North Korean nuclear weapons.
