Hollywood myth-making on Valerie Plame controversy
Washington Post ^ | 11/3/10 | Editorial

Posted on 12/04/2010 2:33:51 PM PST by FTJM

WE'RE NOT in the habit of writing movie reviews. But the recently released film "Fair Game" - which covers a poisonous Washington controversy during the war in Iraq - deserves some editorial page comment, if only because of what its promoters are saying about it. The protagonists portrayed in the movie, former diplomat Joseph C. Wilson IV and former spy Valerie Plame, claim that it tells the true story of their battle with the Bush administration over Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and Ms. Plame's exposure as a CIA agent. "It's accurate," Ms. Plame told The Post. Said Mr. Wilson: "For people who have short memories or don't read, this is the only way they will remember that period."

We certainly hope that is not the case. In fact, "Fair Game," based on books by Mr. Wilson and his wife, is full of distortions - not to mention outright inventions. To start with the most sensational: The movie portrays Ms. Plame as having cultivated a group of Iraqi scientists and arranged for them to leave the country, and it suggests that once her cover was blown, the operation was aborted and the scientists were abandoned. This is simply false. In reality, as The Post's Walter Pincus and Richard Leiby reported, Ms. Plame did not work directly on the program, and it was not shut down because of her identification.

This crap comes out, and meanwhile the completed Red Dawn remake that has China attacking the US languishes for lack of political testicular fortitude, and is virtually guaranteed to break the $100 million mark just in theatrical release.

Gawd I hate Hollywood.

I'm lazy.

Yes. Penn’s movie about poor, innocent Valerie Plame and the evil Bush administration, is a dog. A flop. A bomb. A stinkeroo. A total box office failure.

The movie, which stars serial liberal wacko Penn and Naomi Watts, has rung up a paltry $4,393,000 in American ticket sales in 21 days of release. It’s worldwide take is just $9,349,628.

Considering that it cost $21 million to make, the investors are taking a well-deserved bath.

“Hollywood has a habit of making movies about historical events without regard for the truth; “Fair Game” is just one more example.”

In view of this statement maybe you will want to revisit your comments.

And then the “geniuses” aka useful idiots wonder why a Big Hollywood company like MGM is on the auction block.

Hint to Hollywood: We’re not as gullible as you think we are, and in fact most of us are a lot smarter than you!

No, I'll keep my statement. Do you see anything in that Op-Ed that addresses the unfailing Hollywood bias against Republicans and Conservatives?

Given what they've written, they could just as easily be talking about "Titanic", or "JFK", two movies that take great liberties with historical events.

This movie isn't taking liberties with historical events, it's part and parcel a leftwing propaganda piece - and it's but one of dozens of movies just like it that has come out of Hollywood, especially the last 8 or years.

Sounds a lot like an Oliver Stone “documentary”.

Charlie Wilson’s comment when asked about the movie was that it was pretty accurate, but it was a shame they left out Reagan’s role, because without Reagan’s help and blessing it never would have happened.

Ms. Plame was not a Female James Bond or Modesty Blaise. Her “Field” work consisted of going to parties, cultivating low level sources and reporting back to HQ. Much like the Diplomatic Cables released. Mostly just Gossip to report.

I also think that “Battlefield Earth” with John Travolta made more money ...(you can buy it for sixteen cents on Amazon)

Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong here.

Seems like I read at the time that Valerie was not even classified as “covert” when she was outed. That they had tried her as covert and she bombed, just like her movie.

Do I have this even close to correct?

Hollywood doesn't care if it makes money on these propaganda films. They just want to get them made so that future generations will see them and think they are historical. They'll probably be shown in school. Web searches will bring up the lies that filled the news media for years. This one retraction will be hit number 5,000 and no one will ever see it.

The film bombed here in the US, because at least a portion of the public KNOWS that this film is nothing by self promoting, anti-American lies.

The PROBLEM is that this movie will have WORLD WIDE circulation and gain BIG BUCKS overseas and continue to feed the “America is evil” mentality that prevails.
