Rapanui (Easter Island) Under Fire By Chilean Troops
Past Horizons ^ | Saturday, December 4, 2010 | Taken from a press release

Posted on 12/05/2010 9:06:41 PM PST by SunkenCiv

Early this morning armed Chilean troops opened fire with rubber bullets on Rapanui civilians. The police started shooting and tear gassing as the Rapanui people gathered in solidarity...

As the Chilean troops charged towards the fleeing Rapanui, ClaudioTuki was hit in the forehead and Enrique Tepano was shot in the face. Santi Hitorangi was shot in his right leg from behind, and as he attempted to continue to film the situation he was shot twice in the back...

The Rapanui people are determined not to be removed from the land that they feel is rightfully theirs and try to defend themselves by throwing rocks amid the bullets flying toward them.

The judge and fiscal official who activated the order for the police to take action appear to have disappeared and no other officials can be found to answer for what is happening. The police claim that they are only following orders...

The Rapanui people want to be issued with title deeds to their lands as this is required under Chilean law. Instead of finding a peaceful solution the Chilean government has delayed and criminalized the Rapanui clans that are carrying out the re-occupation.

However, the Rapanui are committed to this fight even although they have no funding and are unarmed. The Rapanui say that they are up against large well financed foreign and Chilean private interests who aim to privatize the island and its archaeological treasures, the MOAI.

It reads like a high school newsletter. The “photojournalism” is really cheesy too.

Indeed. Putting down a riot with tear gas and rubber bullets is not the same as opening fire on the island. Very misleading headline.

O Rapa Nui E

Now who would want to shoot at these folks? 2,000 miles from nowhere, give ‘em back their island.

What intrigues me about Easter Island is this:

Scientists discover Easter Island ‘fountain of youth’
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1198366/Fountain-youth-drug-extend-life-decade.html
... In tests on animals, the chemical increased life expectancy by a ... chemical is produced by a microbe that lives in the Easter Island soil. ...

This is cute: “rapamycin” heh heh...

The problem with island populations is de facto incest as the family lines cross multiple times. The Pitcairn Islanders had the same problems with authorities, who were transporting some people out to find mates somewhere else. The photo I remember of one of the Pitcairn babes made me want to, uh, relocate.
