'Vandals have hacked at the heart of Christianity'

2,000-year-old Holy Thorn Tree of Glastonbury is cut down

Vandals have destroyed one of the most celebrated Christian pilgrimage sites in Britain and chopped down a tree said to have sprouted from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea 2,000 years ago.

The Holy Thorn Tree of Glastonbury, Somerset, is visited by thousands every year to pay homage and leave tokens of worship. Those visiting today were moved to tears on finding the tree cut to a stump.

The sacred tree is unique in that it blossoms twice a year - at Christmas and Easter - and sprigs taken from the thorn are sent to The Queen each year for the festive table.

And why does this surprise anyone? Mo-slimes and others who despise Christianity can get away with anything, and so they do this.

What will happen if they get caught? My bet is nothing. Nothing at all. We'll just tell them we're saddened. That should do some good...NOT.

Even Lewis the non-Catholic wasn’t a big Cromwell fan.

NUKE MECCA NOW!

NO ISLAM, NO TERROR!

Sorry to change the subject. The destruction of the Glastonbury thorn tree was a despicable act. But I am encouraged to learn that thorn trees are hardy and quickly regenerate. And this tree really did originate in the Middle East.

There’s always room for miracles.

Right...Glastonbury is full of New-Agers and Gaia types.

It could actually be a christian behind the act.

Another theory from the Telegraph story:
The owner of Wearyall Hill is Edward James, 70, who was arrested this week in connection with the collapse of Crown Currency Exchange, of which he is a major shareholder. The company, which has 8,000 creditors, collapsed in October, owing £16 million. One possibility is that the attack may have been part of a vendetta against Mr James, who is on police bail.

Mr James said he had spoken to police about the attack on the tree "but we don't know who it (the culprit) could be yet."

He said: "People have said the tree was destroyed to get at me because of the Crown Currency Exchange affair.

"They were saying it was vendetta time. I know a lot of people are hurting at the moment but this was a very holy tree. It's weird.”

Of course they were worshipping it. This is no different that going to the Wailing Wall or traversing to Mecca.

If they let the tree alone it may well grow back. We’ve all seen stumps with many sprouts coming out and in just a few years, the’ve turned into trunks. Often they form a tree more lovely than the original.

The “mindless vandals” might be mindless Moslems.

Glad to know that you are All-Knowing and All-Seeing and can see into all their hearts and minds.

As I will not be dragged into a Catholic v. Protestant Religious Flame War of Christianity, I will sum it up are saying that your opinions are not relevant to me as they have nothing to do with my Faith, and your presumptions are, to say the least, uncharitable and, at the other extreme, bordering on un-Christian-like.

Follow up as you will. I will neither read nor respond.

Nonsense. Do you have anything that once belonged to your parents, grandparents, or other forebearers? Something you keep on your mantel that reminds you of them?

Is that worshipping too, in your world?

“It was then replanted on the hill in 1951.”

Interesting history of the “tree”. In quotes as I’m not sure replanting some of its roots still qualifies as being a 2000 year-old tree.

However, that gives hope that the remnants of this tree will live on in spite of the attempts at destroying the tree. (A HUGE metaphor in there).

And interesting. Not to say that a “miracle” didn’t happen with the whole original planting, but it almost sounds like a seed was planted - and he used his staff to shove it into the dirt?

I love the old legends and stuff. Not that it makes a difference if it is real or not. Just interesting to ponder.

It is for things like this, malicious damage to Holy Thorn Tree of Glastonbury that the Lord giveths us the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy.

I don't think you're getting the point. Nobody is worshipping this tree. It is a symbol of the early planting of Christianity in Britain.

The people who swed off all its limbs did so, not because they dislike trees, but because they dislike Christianity. If it were the limb-hackers' own tree--- a tree they owned ---it would be distasteful to maim it. Since it is somebody else's tree, it is a criminal offense as well as a symbolic act of odium Dei
