HOSTS File Blocklist of RIGHTHAVEN Clients as of Dec 5 2010

Righthaven LLC -- a bottom feeding legal outfit -- has teamed up with the Las Vegas Review-Journal to sue 'mom and pop' websites, as well as nonprofit, political action, public interest, writers, and forum board operators for copyright violations. The strategy of Righthaven is to sue hundreds and thousands of these websites and counts on the fact that many are unfunded and will be forced to "settle out of court." All cases are being filed in a Nevada Federal Court and must be fought in this jurisdiction. You are not safe from Righthaven if you are out-of-state.

- How Do I Avoid a Lawsuit? 

How do end users of web content protest against this copyright troll outfit?  We whip out the big First Amendment stick of Freedom of Association and boycott the RightHaven client media companies.   

This article will focus on Windows operating system and a freeware program called HostsMan. I will give an Apple OS X alternative called GasMask but I have not personally used that software.

( I am also including  a way to block 156,000+ malicious and advertising servers in this tutorial, however you can skip

Windows Installation of HOSTS file management software.

1.  Click to  http://www.abelhadigital.com/hostsman  and download the HostsMan Installer Version: 3.2.73 or a newer stable beta version.

2.  Install Hostsman with default options AND TICK THE BOX ON THE "MAKE BACKUP OF HOSTS FILE ."  Windows2000 to WindowsXP will have default directory of C:\Program Files\HostsMan , WIndows Vista and newer will have C:\Program Files (x86)\HostsMan

3.  Run HostsMan.  In the Menu Select Tools->Options . 

(Note for Step 4 onward, if using Windows Vista , WIn7 or WinServer2008, you need to click on the UAC shield to allow HostsMan Administrator access at this point.)

On the left menu, click ->System. select the box "Automatically run on Windows Startup".

On the left menu, click ->Update . Select the box "Ask for Confirmation when new updates are available.  Select Default Action as "Merge with Hosts file"

Click APPLY.

Click OK.

4.  In the Menu Select Hosts->Manage Update Sources .

 add the following sources for host file automated updates:

5. in Hostsman menu bar go to Tools-> HostsMan Editor

6.  Click green Add button at top of menu.

7.  GO to Tools-> HOstsOptimizer .  Make sure the Create Backup box IS ticked.  Then click OPtimize Hosts button.

8.  Congratulations, you are now boycotting the copyright trolls of RIGHTHAVEN media.

9.  Users of Microsoft Windows 2000 and above, may want to disable
    the Windows built in DNS service if experiencing a slowdown as
    a result of using the HOSTS file for advert and malicious
    site blocks. TO do this, go to ->Tools->Options->on left click ->System. Click the Disable Service Button.

9.  You should be good to go.

7.  The main HostsMan window should pop up.  Bring it to the front if it isn't already.
      From the main window: GO to Tools-> HostsOptimizer .  Make sure the Create Backup box IS ticked.  Then click Optimize Hosts button.  This can take some time depending on the power of your PC, let it run.  (It searches for duplicates and puts multiple urls on the same line to save space and speed up reading the HOSTS file.  A new pop up will come up saying "Hosts file Optimized" Click “OK”. Now Close the HostsOptimizer Window. MInimize the HostsMan window. You are done.

8.  Congratulations, you are now boycotting the copyright trolls of RIGHTHAVEN media.

I confess to being lazy -- once you're on my boycott lists there is no formal procedure to get off.

General Mills got on my Permanent Boycott list in the 90s. I forget why -- maybe it had something to do with wildlife or hunting or even farming. But then, "permanent" means I don't have to remember.

My answer is... if you are using Linux you should know how to do this on your own.

You need all of the packages, you can then use the automated blocklists and input the specific righthaven blocklist with copy and paste into your HOSTS file.

I am lazy since I use linux mostly inside VMs, I copy my windows hosts file into a .txt and copy over to my VMs once in a while.

Your instructions in #22 above were flawless. Updated my PC and MAC OS machines in less than 5 minutes. Moving onto the rest of the machines in the house (Wife, kids, etc..)
