Turned out Ronaldus Magnus backed off and didn't shut down the government long enough to FORCE the Democrats to give him the cuts in government spending he wanted.

I really wouldn't expect Obama to exhibit any greater bravery than that.

What Obama means here is simply the fact that unless the Democrats "take the deal" he will be at the mercy of the Republicans for the next 2 years ~ which is, of course, true!
