Two Californias
Private Papers ^ | Dec. 16, 2010 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 12/18/2010 10:25:25 AM PST by T.L.Sink

For weeks I travelled about because I wanted to witness what is happening to a state that has the highest sales and income taxes, the most lavish entitlements, the near-worst public schools (based on federal test scores), and the largest number of illegal aliens in the nation. The closest elementary school (my alma mater) is 94 percent Hispanic and 1 percent white, and well below testing norms in math and English. The rural roads of California are turning into rubble and poorly maintained. These areas are ground zero, so to speak, of 20 years of illegal immigration. Farming is depressed. Many of the rural trailer-house compounds are no different from what I've seen in the Third World. Small business regulations are driving residents out of the state at the rate of 2,000 to 3,000 a week. Over a hundred mile stretch, I was the only non-Hispanic. Such vast transformations over the last 20 years are the result of unchecked illegal immigration from Mexico. California doesn't care whether one broke the law to arrive here or continues to break it by staying. It asks nothing of the illegals - no proficiency in English, no acquaintance with American history, no proof of income, no record of education or skills. It does provide all the public assistance it can afford (and more that it borrows for).

Hanson concludes with the following: "How odd that we overregulate those who are citizens and have capital to the point of banishing them from the state, but do not regulate those who are aliens and without capital to the point of encouraging millions more to follow in their footsteps. HUNDERDS OF THOUSANDS SENSE ALL THAT AND ARE VOTING WITH THEIR FEET -- AND THE RESULT IS A SORT OF SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND POLITICAL TIME-BOMB, WHOSE TICKS ARE GETTING LOUDER."

Ya know if an article about Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan was posted 3x, I could understand your outrage. Some of us may have missed this earlier. Heck, it's only wasting a few electrons. Chill out.

Unfortunately a good portion of them have the cancerous liberal mentality and are moving to infect their new areas to restart the process of economic and liberal destruction in new areas.

I hate to hijack a thread about the evils of duplicate posting, but VDH's article got me to thinking about recent experiences of my own, traveling on business in southern California. I have a bad sense of direction and get lost readily, and I sometimes find myself driving around in my rental car in areas that aren't on the direct path between the airport and my destination. (Less so, now that I've discovered GPS.) I recommend this highly. Unless you get out and poke around where you normally would not go, like VDH, you have no idea how much of this country already has slipped the leash and joined the Third World.

And if you can't get out to SoCal, you probably can have a similar experience in your own back yard. Northern Virginia, New Jersey, North Carolina -- they all have favelas and barrios that have to be experienced to be believed. Don't just rush past them on your way from your cushy office to your cushy house: stop and poke around. In fact, get out of your car and take a stroll. Chances are you won't get hurt: these places aren't Detroit or Gary. They just aren't your country anymore.

Take a break, get out, and behold your future. You and your kids are paying for it.

Go to Huntington Station, Long Island, New York and you’ll think you’re in Guatemala!

You’re exactly right. It sure isn’t about integration. Multi-culti kumbaya has no basis in reality. Immigrants tend to bring their culture with them and build their communities and associations around that culture.

You’d think that our oh-so-smart intellectual ruling class could grasp this concept and make better decisions about the cultures we allow into this country. Somalia? Must have been first-rate crack being passed around that day.

The thing is, this could be dealt with in relatively short order.

Some are afraid of ghost towns appearing where deported illegal aliens once resided, but there are plenty of American citizens who have no objection to pleasant weather and natural beauty, who would happily take their place, should California be reformed.

It’s simply a political problem.

The other thing is that most Americans welcome immigrants, provided they do the following: 1) learn and speak English, 2) obey the law and 3) show some loyalty and gratefulness to their new country.

Right! The liberals are the enablers who could care less about our cultural values and our political and economic stability - if only they can pander to the massive influx of illegals for their VOTES!
