Joe Manchin, the newly elected Democratic senator from West Virginia, is taking heat from Republicans for skipping several crucial votes on Saturday to spend time with his family.
Manchin missed votes to advance the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants under a certain age who meet certain requirements, and repeal the military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

.....and that would be because the totally corrupt WV GOP is quite happy assuming the back bench role in Charleston, accepting whatever crumbs the RATS throw them in exchange for their votes.
Republicans were giving him heat for missing votes? Shoot, I would give most Democrats air fare to stay out of DC as much as possible.
Understand one thing. The WV GOP jumped on the Raese bandwagon, not the other way around. Without Raese's personal wealth, the WV GOP would have not had ANY viable candidate.
I disagree with repealing the 17th Amendment. Does Roland Burris come to mind? We would get very liberal senators from blue states and those seats might go to a conservative with the voters.
You are kidding, right? Look at when crap really started going wrong, it was during the Wilson administration when we got the 16th and 17th Amendment AND the Federal Reserve. The 17th took the power of the states away to control government mandates. Now all we have are two Houses of Representatives with no one to put a halt on government power grabs. Do you think the states would have allowed their representatives to jam cap and trade down their throats? Do you think the states would have allowed Obamacare? Medicare? Medicaid? Federal takeover of schools? And the list goes on and on and on.
In a word, yes. You can’t be that naive to think state legislators would magically become high-minded with respect to the U.S. Constitution. The 17th was passed because too many Senators were already becoming too far removed from the wishes of the people (and were often puppets or puppetmasters of powerful interests). You also ignore the political dynamics of many states that would never be able to elect Republicans, let alone Conservatives of any stripe.

And, no, I’m not kidding. Some state legislatures are just as corrupt as the regime now in power. Do you really think that Marco Rubio would’ve been elected if it were up to the states? I think not. On the other hand, we would have a majority of DEMS in every seat,if left up to the states.
And, yes, we probably would have had cap and trade by now, if let up to the states. The stupidity of Americans who vote for these liberals are to be blamed, but, I doubt that anything would be different if left up to the state legislatures to select our senators and house representatives. Look at those who were appointed to fill interim positions. How many of them were conservatives? NONE!
At least his predecessor, Grand Kleagle, Robert Byrd, had not trouble standing up for his "principles," wherein Manchin ran as a "conservative" but refused to show up to support them when it counted.
Presumably, Manchin's safe doing such thinks in WV for those folk don't expect much from their corrupt officials.
