Not very surprising. The typical “theater experience” has been going downhill for years and most people who care about film have pretty decent home theater setups these days and no shortage of offerings to watch. Combine that with a soft economy and consumers are very picky about how to stretch their entertainment dollars. The net is there are perhaps only one or two movies a year that really warrant seeing in a theater vs. waiting a few months and watching from the comfort of home. And even then a lot depends on the quality of the local theaters.
You’ve produced the original historic music video. Is the “Other Walls 2 Fall” video out as well? However, not being interested in that musical genre (Rock), I’m more interested in your Mars project, and the Malta vs. Muslims project.
I grew up with the big-band, jazz, Sinatra era of music. And I find Rock & Roll too discordant (for my ears I suppose) to enjoy. Even if used to underscore a historical video, I simply tune out the sound. Sorry, but that’s goofy me. I’m a hopeless old fogy...
OTOH, the Mars project and Malta vs. Muslims idea get my attention. That’s stuff I can wrap my mind around (without my ears interfering...) :>) Keep us informed as things progress. You have a large audience here :>)
Has anybody mentioned the 20 minutes of commercials you now have to sit through after paying 10 bucks for the ticket?
No thanks.
I prefer your analysis....Thanks!
No, I think Costner’s role as “a now” reluctant gunfighter is central to the movie. I doubt the gunfight scene could have been brought off any other way. Duvall’s character couldn’t provide the audacity needed to pull off the scene. Thus, would Boss Spearman (Duvall) have followed anyone else into that fray?
If you’re considering Costner’s earlier appearances in such less “macho” roles as Field of Dreams and Dances With Wolves, check out John Wayne’s unforgettable role in The Quiet Man, or even the earlier The Shepherd of the Hills. They were both roles contrary to the “macho” image Wayne had brought to the screen, yet he was marvelous in them.
Shepherd of the Hills is a favorite John Wayne film of mine. Not as much because of John Wayne, but because of Harry Carey. He was the spittin’ image of my grand dad, and this role made me realize that. My grand dad wasn’t the tough Westerner Carey portrayed in his Westerns, but the gentle man he portrayed in this film. That, along with his looks, did it for me...forever.
Duvall is the best! Just re-watched the Lonesome Dove series...better than most any movie these days.
We went to see King George’s Speech last night, and we enjoyed it. We also saw Secretariat and enjoyed that, too. The attendance last night was sparse, and those who were there seemed to be 15+ years older than hubby and I. (mostly seniors) I hate to go to the movies because the price is so high and the movies so unappealing to me. But hubby loves movies, especially animated ones. I usually beg off going to any movies and send hubby with our children. Our oldest daughter took her siblings and daddy minus our oldest two sons to see Tangled last weekend, and they LOVED it. The last time hubby took them all to see something without me was when UP was in theaters. He loved that so much that he came home and made me go see it with him immediately. lol
HEY HOLLYWOOD: IT’S BECAUSE YOU MAKE C. R. A. P.!
THought that movie (Green Hornet) looked like crap from the commercials-and the way Hollywood has been “pimping” it. HIPSTER crap!
Add Voyage of the Dawn Treader to that list! Wonderful movie.
Why couldn’t someone make a “Breakfast Club”..something with plot, that movie has virtually 0 special effects?
Even it doesn’t hold water to some of the greats of the 30’s-60’s..
You forgot the most important factor: loss in quality of the average movie, as well as the increasingly anti-Christian, Anti-American, and pro anything weird, or progressive “plot”s.
you are on the list “again”. Sorry for my losing the original list & glad you caught up with us
Plot-driven/story-driven movies are very tough pitches these days.
I am sick of animation and pixar but those movies are doing better than live action so I guess they will be with us for a while.
I haven’t cared for the last few I’ve seen. How to Train Your Dinosaur was kinda cute, but I did not like Toy Story 3. It was sad and not at all touching. Too much meanness and cruelty.
I usually get bored during animated films.
We walked out of Iron Man (the first one), so didn’t bother with the second one.
That liberal crappo was one of the problems with Avatar. I enjoyed the first couple of hours because it was different and beautiful but the last 50 minutes and that incredibly stupid battle scene was a real whip.
Duh. Those big creatures appear right at first to attack the hero guy. We never see them again until they come out to fight the mean corporate/army people. Kinda like the Ewoks the third (real) Star Wars movie.
So... you really, really liked Green Hornet?
I have The King’s Speech on my wait list at Netflix. I think I’ll like it.
That’s one nice thing about a DVD ... if you have a problem hearing in the theater ... you can put words up. I do it all the time, especially with an English movie.. I mean as in British accents.
