In this instance, the store which sold Begolly the gun was Dunham's Sporting Goods in Natrona Heights, Penn., authorities say. Two Dunham's employees who spoke to TPM on the phone, one who said his first name was Jeff and another who identified himself as Joe, said they have no comment. They declined to say whether they were cooperating with federal authorities.

SNIPPET: “”I had a lot of thoughts about you today,” Mohammed K. wrote to his Western Pennsylvania pen pal late last year. “About us both doing martyrdom operations together in my school. . . . It was like we both were in a big truck and had guns and we were shooting randomly at a huge crowd of kids.””

SNIPPET: “Mohammed’s chat room friend was Emerson Begolly, a Pennsylvania State University student who was soon charged with soliciting unrelated terror attacks. Transcripts of the chats were publicly filed in that case.

During the Nov. 22, 2010, chat, Mohammed told Begolly he lived near National Security Agency headquarters in Fort Meade, Md.

“The place where I live is a HOTBED of NSA and all the security agencies of Amrika (sic),” Mohammed wrote. “And the kids who study in my school proudly state that their parents work in NSA and FBI, and even carry key chains - piss me off.”

“Like Columbine?” Begolly asked.

“Na’am, lol” Mohammed wrote, using the Arabic word for “yes” and Internet slang for “laughing out loud.””

Self-Radicalized Homegrown Terrorist Sentenced

Those who have met Emerson Begolly in person might describe him as a shy young man. But online, the 24-year-old was the complete opposite—he forcefully incited jihadist violence against Americans and Jews. And when FBI agents attempted to talk to him in 2011, he reached for a loaded handgun in his pocket and then bit the agents who disarmed him.

Today, a federal judge sentenced Begolly to eight years and six months in prison for soliciting others to engage in acts of terrorism within the United States and for using a firearm in relation to an assault on FBI agents. “This is a guy who definitely had the potential to hurt people,” said Special Agent Blake McGuire, who led part of the investigation from our Pittsburgh office. “He was a disaffected U.S. citizen who was susceptible to the message of violent extremism, and he became self-radicalized on the Internet.
