State of the Union Address: President Promotes More Government to 'Win the Future'
Catholic Online ^ | 1/26/11 | Keith A Fournier

Posted on 01/26/2011 5:51:32 AM PST by tcg

After claiming that the Nation was "poised for progress", the stock market was "roaring back" and the "back of the recession had been broken" he called the Nation to "win the future" through innovation, education and the rebuilding of our infrastructure. In the first half of the speech he also outlined a governing approach to accomplishing these policy goals which positioned federal funding and federal assistance as making it possible for us to "reinvent ourselves."

The President told both chambers of Congress that we could be in our "Sputnik moment" explaining, "Our free enterprise system is what drives innovation. But because it's not always profitable for companies to invest in basic research, throughout history our government has provided cutting-edge scientists and inventors with the support that they need. That's what planted the seeds for the Internet. That's what helped make possible things like computer chips and GPS.

"Just think of all the good jobs - from manufacturing to retail - that have come from those breakthroughs..."

...The Republican response was given by Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee Chairman. While showing respect to the President, he laid out a very different governing vision stating, "We believe government's role is both vital and limited - to defend the nation from attack and provide for the common defense . to secure our borders. to protect innocent life. to uphold our laws and Constitutional rights . to ensure domestic tranquility and equal opportunity . and to help provide a safety net for those who cannot provide for themselves.

Rush was just now talking about this. CBS has a “poll” with 92% approving the speech. CNN’s “numbers” are also very high.

George Orwell would be proud.

I am reminded of the X-Files movie tag line “Fight the Future”. I think it applies.

As is his style, he used way too many words to say very little worth hearing... an empty suit spewing empty rhetoric.

It seems to me that BO is in the twilight zone and within that zone the November election never happened. Every program needs funding and funding only comes from one source - the House.

Now, the House with Republicans in control doesn’t appear to be a funding source relating to new programs so why not acknowledge that fact and move on? But no, not Obama - it’s the same old S@it!

Even democrats said the speech was boring, boring, boring.

He’s got no answers to fix the economy and it’s now more obvious than ever he’s an empty suit looking for a hanger that’s nowhere in sight.

'..."win the future" through innovation...'

Exhibit #1A on Obama The Liar: with all the money he's spent over the past 24 months, setting us up for a $1.5 TRILLION deficit in fiscal 2011, there's one program that stands out like a beacon because it was CUT:

NASA. The most innovative federal agency there is. And predictably, their jobs are being lost by the hundreds right now.

That line should be "mortgage the future ... through duplicity."

I think the magic that his words once held has diminished. IOW, folks like Chris Mathews aren’t getting the same “thrill” up their leg when they listen to him speak. Those of us that never felt that thrill just feel the same old nausea.

I looks as if we have to "win the future" from big government.

When he said he wanted to make government "more confident" I knew he wanted to make government more bold, as if it already isn't bold enough. When he said he wanted to make government "more efficient" it almost make my blood run cold.

I mean honestly .. I think he is running our country and I get physically ill.

You must be made of more than me to have watched it .. thanks for taking the hit for the team.

Our infrastructure receives a “D” grade compared globally. It is in horrible shape.

Have you been to other countries? I respectfully suggest there are very few countries that can equal the quality of our infrastructure, even though we have a backlog of needed repairs.

The first step in winning the future is encouraging American innovation. None of us can predict with certainty what the next big industry will be or where the new jobs will come from.. Thirty years ago, we couldn't know that something called the Internet would lead to an economic revolution. What we can do — what America does better than anyone else — is spark the creativity and imagination of our people. We're the nation that put cars in driveways and computers in offices; the nation of Edison and the Wright brothers; of Google and Facebook. In America, innovation doesn't just change our lives. It is how we make our living.

But but but... What about green energy? Is not mommy government already picking this 'winner', subsidizing this 'winner', and promoting this 'winner' before the race is even begun? The free market does not see value -why does mommy government insist something of no value is valuable?

I myself think mommy government bets on a loser. What else would one expect from socialists whose whole ideology historically has comprised one epic failure after another...
