Psychologist to educators: Failure of black males to graduate not your fault
Palm Beach Post ^ | January 25, 2011 | Jason Schultz

A noted psychologist told a gathering of teachers, school officials and parents that the reason why black males are struggling to graduate high school has very little to do with the failures of teachers.

It has much more to do with the failures of modern society, he said.

"I'm unwilling to stand up here and pretend that you are somehow responsible for their failures," Na'im Akbar told teachers Tuesday at a symposium on graduation rates at Atlantic Community High School. The symposium was the second meeting of a task force started by the school district to generate ideas to improve graduation rates, particularly among black males.

The graduation rate for Palm Beach County black males is about 65 percent, far behind the nearly 82 percent districtwide rate, according to a letter from Superintendent Art Johnson in the symposium program.

He pointed to poverty and the high number of black children born to young, single mothers as larger causes for graduation rate problems.

And did the speaker make any connection between the "high number of black children born to young, single mothers" and the "poverty" mentioned earlier in the sentence?

“It has much more to do with the failures of modern society, he said. “

A failing black kid or ANY other kid,

is NOT MY FAULT!

I am NOT raising OTHER KIDS!

It is NOT my place or role to RAISE OTHER KIDS.

It is up the PARENT(s) of those kid, to RAISE THEM.

It is up to the PARENT(s) to make sure they are learning.

Is it any wonder, people view this as CHILD ABUSE?

It is the MOM taking charge of the education.

It is the BLACK and HISPANIC culture that does NOT value learning. This “value” trickles down to the kids. Kids KNOW there are LOW expecations in place for them because of THEIR RACE. They PLAY THE RACE card and LIEBRAL RACISTS LOVE IT.

Explain why the CHINESE RACE excells and black hispanics don’t. The CULTURE and PRIORITIES are different.

We just need to elect a black president to be the role model they so desperately need to prosper and to show the world that America's whites aren't racist and holding them back.

Never mind, that didn't work out so great.

Well, not even whites are acting white any more. Family structure has fallen apart. We see how Asian families manage to succeed in our schools while Hispanics, blacks and whites fail. The culture simply does not reward academic high achievers. So ironically California colleagues discriminate on racial grounds to keep Asians from monopolizing the places in the elite colleges.

Sharply reducing welfare would have a huge effect.

We could exert effective outside pressure tomorrow simply by freezing all unemployment benefit (whatever you call it over there) until 2050.

Call it the “Keeping It Real” Initiative.

We forgot to make sure he wasn't a marxist.

““Na’im Akbar” whatever happened to normal names like Leroy or Willie?”

That’s another part of the problem.

They don’t assimulate and don’t want to be like “whites”. It’s part of their culture to REJECT white “values” such as education.

You can throw as much money as you want at blacks and it won’t make ANY difference UNLESS they WANT TO LEARN. Apparently they do NOT want to learn. It is not a priority. It also has NOTHING TO DO WITH ECONOMIC STATUS.

Candi Rice was POOR and black. She EARNED her education and made it a priority because it was a priority with her PARENSTS. Her PARENTS encouraged her to do BETTER and she did.

Liberalism is to blame.

Exactly. It turned black males into a non-necessary part of the family. They mooched off of the woman on welfare. Mom with no full-time employed dad around equals young black males with no discipline and no goals and no positive role model. Black families were more solid in the 50s. Before the libs "saved" them with all their programs.

I also think we make it too comfortable with all the entitlements. Many do not have to worry about eating, a place to live, health care, free cell phones, free internet access, food stamps can be used to eat in restarants, etc. If things were not so easy for many of these people, they might be more hungry to improve their lives.

Hm?...If it is society's fault, then why are KIPP schools having spectacular success with our nation's most “at risk” children? Huh?

Why is it the ever study show the amazing success of vouchers and charters when children who were accepted by lottery are compared to those who failed to gain acceptance.

Yep! This is just another attempt to blame the parents and “society”. It couldn't possibly be the fault of Marxist indoctrination, failed whole word reading and new, new, new math abominations.

'Akbar said children are "miseducated" before they even get to the classroom because they now get their socialization and image of how they are supposed to act from television instead of their families and communities.'

"Basically" saying the same thing does not equal the same thing. Remember when Bill Cosby came out and blames the black family for their children's failures? He was ostracized for it.

Time to start saying what you mean....instead of "going around it".
