Doctor's orders: Go to Mexico
HOUSTON CHRONICLE ^ | Feb. 7, 2011 | HARVEY RICE

GALVESTON — The crushing news came last month as Maria Sanchez was being prepared for surgery to remove a banana-size tumor along her spine that had crept between her vertebrae.

Unable to use her right hand because of the growing tumor, Sanchez, 24, had been at the University of Texas Medical Branch's John Sealy Hospital for six days when, she said, a Spanish-speaking doctor told her she had to leave the hospital immediately because she was an illegal immigrant. The doctor said she should have surgery in Mexico, according to Sanchez.

I would like to see a newspaper story about what happens if an American goes to a hospital in Mexico and expects free cancer-surgery.

The real ‘crushing news’ in this sotry is how many dollars have been spent for this family in the years she had been here illegally.

Taxpayers deserve better.

‘”They treated us like animals, like dogs or something,” said Aguillon, 36, an unemployed welder.’

I bet they can’t wait to get back to Mexico where they won’t be treated like animals. He is an unemployed welder.
Isn’t it time Mexico takes responsibity for it’s own citizens.

That is the correct course of action for this woman.

SORRY.

Many hospitals have had to close because of the expense of treating non-citizens. This endagers our own citizens’ lives.

And might I just add, if ANYTHING goes wrong with the treatment of the illegal aliens, the lawyers are standing by. I know firsthand.

Aguillon said he was upset about being told to take his wife to Mexico, a country he left when he was 13. "It's like saying to that black lady, because she is black, go to Africa," he said.

Only if "that black lady" is actually FROM Africa and is residing here illegally; otherwise there is a WORLD of difference, because "that black lady" is almost certainly a CITIZEN of the United States.

A doctor who reviewed Sanchez's medical records for the Houston Chronicle said they showed that UTMB ejected a woman with a potentially fatal condition because she was unable to pay.

Wouldn't disclosure of this type of information to a newspaper be a violation of the privacy provisions of the federal HIPPA laws?

Excuse me, but an American having a heart attack, car accident or stroke cannot get emergency medical care in Mexico...and it has been thus for decades...without forking over upfront money.

Enough.

SEND THE BILL TO THE BUSH "AMNESTY" FAMILY.

NO, it's like telling a Canadian lady, because she is Canadian, go back to Canada for your socialist canadian healthcare rather than trying to soak our taxpayers for your medical bills.

Probably a violation of HIPAA...unless the patient wanted those records released to attempt to outrage the public.

The Chronicle would rather the doctor ordered taxpayers to dig deep to take care of this lawbreakers health care.

Since jail is the option for those who don't pay their taxes, presumably this person's healthcare is more important that that of our own families.

Having worked in three hospitals as part of the Texas Medical Center, I can tell you this is pure B.S.

John Sealy Hospital has a history of providing indigent care.

It is more likely an issue of an illegal not liking something that happened with eyes toward suing.

96 border hospitals have gone bankrupt between CA and TX. There are basically no obstetricians within a couple of hundred miles of the border.

The government in DC mandates the states accept anybody, regardless of insurance, into the ER. However, if you do not go to the ER there are options.

1/2 of the kidney transplants in Dallas are for illegal aliens at a few $100,000 a pop. They are going broke.

In my county in NC about 40% of the live births are to illegal aliens. It is killing us - us being the taxpayer.

She release the information not the hospital or Doctor. In fact most of the story is hearsay.

My sister lived on St. Maarten for 25 years. When she needed medical attention they had to fly to Puerto Rico because they don't take your health insurance there. Tourists have to come up with cash if they get sick there.
