DeMint Surveys the Field, Praises Jeb

February 7, 2011 8:15 P.M. By Robert Costa

Sen. Jim DeMint, the conservative star from South Carolina, is keeping a close eye on the emerging 2012 presidential field. New names, he observes, keep popping up. One of those, of course, is former Florida governor Jeb Bush. Rich, Kathryn, and John have all written about Bush’s appeal in recent days.

DeMint, in an interview with National Review Online, calls Bush “one of the best” possible presidential contenders. “Maybe the person we are looking for has not stepped out yet; it could be a Rick Perry or a Jeb Bush.”

“[Bush] would be a really good president and a good candidate,” DeMint says. “He had a solid record as governor; he showed that he was willing to push innovative things in education and elsewhere.”

DeMint says President Obama is “clearly beatable.” But the GOP nominee, he argues, will need to be formidable, since the president may be able to bounce off of a rebounding economy. Numerous potential candidates, he says, “are watching to see where Obama’s popularity will be. A lot is going to depend on whether people believe that he has anything to do with the economy coming back. And it will come back; you can’t keep the American economy down.”

NRO wonders: In coming months, if Bush and other conservative favorites decide to sit out 2012, will DeMint feel compelled to jump in? “I really am trying to avoid that,” he tells us. “I’m looking for good candidates out there in the field.”

“I would have to feel a strong pull from people all over the country,” DeMint says. “Again, it’s not something that, right now, appears to be in my future.”

But could a grassroots ‘Draft DeMint’ movement stir him to run? “I don’t want to suggest that I’m waiting for any kind of draft,” he says. “It’s really not what I want to do. I really don’t have any intention of running. . . . I’m not ruling anything out, but it’s not something I want to do.”

Well just you wait until Fred Thompson gets in this race.

Lol, that's what I'm counting on. No potential candidate has won my support yet. Maybe next July or August.

Is he, really? Would you please expand on that?

Simple, everyone serving in Washington DC are part of the elite class. The same goes for those in the media who work there. They've lost touch with the common man, some greatly, some such as DeMint, not so much. It's an attitude. They live by different rules than the rest of us. For instance, if we break a law, we go to jail. They may get a "reprimand". The desire to preserve their "perks" is stronger than their desire to serve the people. I want to keep the DeMints and others like him in the congress because there is serious work that needs doing. But their buddy/buddy relationship with the rest of the congressmen of both parties voids them from being president in my book.

That's why I want Sarah Palin as president. She's an outsider, universally despised or feared by those "elites", who has the will to kick butt and take names. We no longer have the luxury of filling the congress and the white house with politicians who survive by "greasing palms". We need a fighter for the people. It's my opinion. You can agree or disagree.

Jeb is not a conservative. That point should be obvious to any conservative. Jeb is RINO. Does anyone honestly believe that Jeb would advocate the elimination of any Federal Department? It's laughable. The BUSH family's first instinct to use government to solve problems.

Sarah has already stated that NPR and NEA be eliminated. She said something along the lines that eliminating those two is an obvious first start. Does any truly believe that Jeb, Newt, Huck, Romney, etc would be bold enough to suggest such a minor start to government reduction?

ALL of the potential men who may run are total wimps. They are very weak on the importance of Liberty. They deserve our contempt. Our Republic is at brink of total destruction. The only conservative speaking boldly for Liberty is Sarah! (opps, and Michelle B)

Well stated! I agree 100%. I pray Sarah will run. She is a tenacious fighter. Sarah is the one the left most fears. Is she runs, they will turn viciously rabid.

I guess you missed this part: I’m not ruling anything out, but it’s not something I want to do.”

That's code for "I'll only run if Sarah doesn't."

All. Afraid. Of the girl.

I noticed he didn’t mention her. Instead he picked two guys who have said no dice to running.

“All. Afraid. Of the girl.”

You got it. A bunch of sissie britches nursing their fragile male (and I use that term advisedly) egos. I would have more respect for them if they came out and said what they think about her. But they almost to a man lack the courage to do so, because they fear her massive army of fans. As soon as you understand that about them, you understand why none of them is fit to lead nor is any of them tough enough to stand up to the Obama crime-slime syndicate that would tear them limb from limb if they were nominated. Only one person has been able to run that gauntlet. The one whose name these dimwitted pantywaists can’t seem to pronounce: Sarah Palin.

Whether she runs or not, the GOP nomination is going through Sarah Palin and her millions of supporters. Make no mistake about that and the GOP-E and all other candidates had better wise-up to this fact.

Only Sarah Palin is capable of raising the $Billion Dollars that obama raised in ‘08, so if she doesn’t run, the GOP had better start thinking about *that* money gap. Sarah Palin will be sorely needed in election 2012. No doubt about it.

If she’s not the nominee, then the nominee will have to be one we like, one that she can endorse, so that we can all be supportive, and that means s/he will have to be rock solid conservative.

[Also, never a weenie, back-stabbing Sarah Palin basher, IMHO of course].

Well, my tagline used to read: Sarah/Michele 2012.
I think estrogen needs a chance...lol.
The two of them could right our Republic.

If she’s not the nominee, Onyx, then it won’t matter who is. Obama will have effectively won the election. He knows this, and it is the reason for this all out effort to get her to stand down.

If she runs, she will win the nomination and when she wins the nomination, she will win the Presidency. At this point, having observed her in action for two and a half years, I am convinced that if she determines to do it, she will be nearly impossible to beat.

I was standing in line at the polls to vote that night in 1980 when we heard that Reagan had been elected. It was my first Republican vote and we were excited as hell to cast our vote for him that night! The whole place was buzzing with excitement! I’m expecting that feeling again in 2012.

“The whole place was buzzing with excitement! I’m expecting that feeling again in 2012.”

I remember it as well. A great day for a great man. As for 2012, I don’t think we are going to be disappointed. The conventional wisdom, which was soooo wrong about Reagan is wrong about Palin as well.

Yours is a wonderful memory! I think and hope you’ll get another one in 2012, provided she runs! Ronald Reagan was my governor, too, so I enjoyed, honored and admired him all of his political life.

Governor Palin has stated repeatedly her first priority is building a fence and securing the border. She supports the Arizona law and governor Jan Brewer, and endorsed her in the last election. She has been to Arizona and seen first hand the problems they are having.

The two have collaborated on a website designed to put pressure on the White House to fight illegal immigration. Governor Palin stands shoulder to shoulder with Jan Brewer and against the Obama/open borders crowd...

You won’t find Jeb on this site:
http://securetheborder.org/

Jeb? He is for the Obama lawsuit against Arizona. .. He has been a vocal opponent to the Arizona law and he thinks the law is racist. He is 100% open borders amnesty all the way. He see’s it as a racial issue (he married a Hispanic) and that is NOT the issue at all.
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/1969/12/31/19691231arizona-immigration-law-jeb-bush-politico.html

The two have diametrically opposite views on this issue. It is a lie to say they have the same view. A lie.

Governor Palin has to put up with a lot of lies from the left, I just find it disgusting she has to suffer these idiots on the right as well.

Diametrically opposite views on immigration?

Both Palin and Bush support a path to citizenship, which you didn't address. And Bush has said: "It is so clear that the first element of comprehensive immigration reform must be to control the border,"

I just find it disgusting that some idiots don't understand the term "diametrically opposite".

Just to pipe in here....there is already a “path to citizenship”....the US has had this in place for years and years so this is not anything new...we already have that.

What does anyone expect from someone who endorsed the most liberal Governor in the history of the republic, Mitt Romney, for President?

I'm constantly amazed at how willfully blind so many here are about these Republican politicians.
