Republicans turn Congress into 'clogged toilet,' says Democratic lawmaker

One of the Democrats' fieriest voices on Capitol Hill accused the Republicans of turning Congress into a "clogged toilet."

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) said Friday that House Republicans were blocking the proper functioning of the lower chamber by debating a bill instructing committees to give closer scrutiny to regulations.

“What we will be doing is ignoring the people’s business of creating jobs and frankly putting ourselves in the role of a clogged toilet,” said Lee. “That means we are doing nothing. We are stuffed up.”

Republicans, flush with election victory, however, responded that clearing unneeded regulation was one important way to kick-start the economy and create jobs.

"The labyrinth that has become this nation's regulatory scheme, has exported jobs, imported litigation, all the while eroding the very limited amount of public trust that is left in the institutions of government," said Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.). "While other Congresses may have delegated and abdicated, we must reclaim the responsibility to govern and legislate.”

Other Democrats argued in more sanitary terms.

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, said that directing Congress to scrutinize regulations put forth by federal agencies controlled by the president was a violation of the separation of powers.

Ah, yes, the voice and tone of civility. Why can’t Republicans learn to be so gracious and considerate?

“Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, said that directing Congress to scrutinize regulations put forth by federal agencies controlled by the president was a violation of the separation of powers.”

Regulations are nothing more than laws and as such are the province of the legislative rather than the executive branch of government.

ROTFLMAO! My thought exactly! If the Democrat toilet is clogged that means the crap's not flowing any more!

Beware of analogies, Sheila!

Congress was a toilet before the Freshmen came in and it needs a roto-rooter to clean the tank.

If there was ever anyone who knows everything there is to know about a clogged toilet, it would be Sheila Jackson Lee. She’s been stinking up the place for years. Sheila long ago forgot the meaning of “courtesy flush”.

Well, if what you are trying to flush is the constitution, than actively clogging the toilet would be exceedingly good.

I'm so glad she explained it for us...we couldn't have understood such a complex metaphor!

The Executive’s power to promulagate regulations is explicitly derived from legislation. The EPA’s attempt to regulate CO2 is derived from powers granted by Congress in the Clean Air Act. It “behooves” Congress to see how the power and authority granted the Executive are being (mis)used.

So the toilet is clogged up now.
