The defector who convinced the White House that Iraq had a secret biological weapons programme has admitted for the first time that he lied about his story, then watched in shock as it was used to justify the war.
Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, codenamed Curveball by German and American intelligence officials who dealt with his claims, has told the Guardian that he fabricated tales of mobile bioweapons trucks and clandestine factories in an attempt to bring down the Saddam Hussein regime, from which he had fled in 1995.
"Maybe I was right, maybe I was not right," he said. "They gave me this chance. I had the chance to fabricate something to topple the regime. I and my sons are proud of that and we are proud that we were the reason to give Iraq the margin of democracy."

Everyone thought they had WMD.
That’s a curveball alright.
So will the left send an apology to George W. Bush for chanting “Bush lied, people died” and admit that Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi lied, people died?
I guess that’s asking too much: honor, honesty and logic are not the left’s strong suits.
Simply not true! Hans Blix (much ridiculed here) was one of several prominent people who said they DID NOT have WMD. Face it: Bush fooled nervous Nervious Nelly conservatives into a needless nation building war.
Everyone thought they had WMD.
hows about all the gass they used on their own people? doesn’t that count? do they really expect us to beleive they used up the last of it?
Maybe he didn't outright lie, but darn it sure sounds like he's guilty of something.
Da-Da-Da. Brings back Bad memories. This was assumed to be the case along time ago.
A strange attempt on your part to excuse Bush for believing his lies ir (worse) cynically using these lies to scare Nervous Nellie conservatives into a needless nation building war.
Hans Blix had his own agenda.
Face it, Saddam wanted them. His Generals thought they had them. His allies thought he had them. His enemies knew he had them after he gassed the kurds.
He had programs to develop them.
Only a fool would believe Saddam didn’t have WMD and programs to get more.
Again, this is not true. “Everyone” did not believe they had WMD. The much maligned Hans Blix is the most prominent example. A lot of folks here owe Blix an apology!
The war started when Iraq invaded Kuwait. The rest was just tying up loose ends.
Every intelligence organization in Europe came to the same conclusion re WMDs.
The Left is determined to re-write and re-teach every fact that touches George Bush, our defense and safety.
Wow ping.
So what the hell did he use when he bombed the Kurds after the Gulf War, stink bombs? Spoiled milk? Lady Gaga CDs?
He used WMDs against his own people. Whether he still had them (or had them in any condition to be used) in 2003 may be up for debate, but he’d already been proven to have had WMDs, and further, the willingness to use them.

Who gives a chit about Hans Blix?
